Genz Benz NX2-212T

Said it before and will say it again, the NeoX, and the presumably more/better, NX2 is one of my favorite cabs out there. If I wasn't into rolling my own, I'd just get one and call it a day.


Oddly, to my ears, I find them to sit somewhere in between "vintage" and "modern" with the ability to do either with a twist of a knib or 2. Maybe it's because I use very little of the tweeter, or because of my default playing style, or whatever, but I don't hear all that much "clean/crisp/modern" as some here describe. It's in there if you want it but it doesn't automatically make you go that way. I've played them with quite a few different amps, but ironically, never a Genz Benz amp.:confused:

Maybe it's because I like to turn things up and get flavor. I'll generally use a bit lower powered amp and a speaker compliment that I can run up "somewhat close to the edge but not over the edge" to arrive at the volume I want, rather than have a bunch of clean headroom like some other players prefer, and these things bring that in spades.

Anyway, they're still one of the best things going.

One thing that stuck out to me reading back through this thread is that Berg. is/was charging well over $1100, approaching $1200 for a 212 cab. IMO, that's just nuts, no matter what it sounds like. You're talking about little nuances there that are completely lost in anyone as soon as you go beyond solo bass, meaning playing with a band. I consider these Genz's to be a little spendy, but worth it, as it'll end up being your do-everything cab for a very, very long time. Just a great cab.

I've been a big fan of Genz Benz products for a while and have owned a couple Shuttle 9.0s, a ShuttleMax 9.2 and now own a Shuttle 9.2. I was looking to downsize my cab system a little bit and was really looking hard at the Bergantino CN212. I even went and sampled the CN212 several times with a variety of amps. It's a great cab.

However, I was presented the opportunity to purchase a new, in the box NX2 212T from a vendor on Ebay at less than half the price of a new Berg. It was one of those "Best Offer" deals. I made a ridiculously low offer and the vendor, to my surprise, agreed!

I took the chance and am so thankful I did. I absolutely love the cab and love it even more matched up with the GB Shuttle 9.2.

Lightweight, crystal clear tone, full low end, smooth tweeter, seriously LOUD, nice dispersion, great build quality and I got it at an amazingly low price point.

If anyone out there has the opportunity to score one of these, don't think twice. It really is as good as advertised. Just my $0.02.

NX2-212T and a Walkabout mostly flat with the tweeter off, getting a satisfying amount of tone compliments after shows at stage volume with the jazz bass or my humbucker'd custom piece (and occasionally grit from a mod'd Sparkle Drive). Can't believe the volume I get from that rig. Still wanting a NX2-112T to magically appear somewhere. Waited too long, I guess.

I haven't played them together and immediately didn't care for the TH500, so the following bit of wind-baggery is largely assumption.

Assuming you like the TH500, I would think they are a good match.
I have owned both but sold the TH500 a few weeks before receiving the NX2-212T.

For me, the NX2 stuff works great with a variety of cabs (better than my EA Wizzy and previously owned Schroeder 15+L, and probably better than my older Bergantino cabs).
I am really happy with the different results running my Mesa Walkabout or MB Little Mark III into the NX2-212T. To me the TH500 is similar enough to either of those heads (to each in different ways).

Based on comparisons I think the TH500+NX2 would be a bit too mid-heavy for my needs. I didn't like it with the Berg HS210 due to the mid character and lacking full bottom (compared to the Walkabout, although I never fully explored/understood the interactive EQ on the TH500). And I think the HS210 is slightly similar to the NX2 stuff, the Berg having what I consider more even and clear output.

What I did like about the TH500 was how quick and punchy it felt and how it really stuck-out in a busy mix (midrange?). Combined with the already punchy NX2 it might shine, or as they say, could possibly "be too much of a good thing" (due perceived inherent the midrange tuning).
I achieve something similar out of the LMIII+NX2 pairing; puncy/quick, warm, mid-forward, but without the "chewy" nature or grit usually associated with the TH500 (LMIII feels just as fast to me, just not as beefy or potentially raunchy).
Felt like I could dial-back the grit on the Tone Hammer, just could never get the mids/lows how I wanted them (unfair, since at the time I wanted it to almost mimic the Walkabout).
Knowing now that I didn't quite understand the EQ function, given the chance I would certainly take the TH500 for another run.

A trending head/cab match here on TB is the TH500+Berg. CN212, and people seem to place the NX2-212T and CN212 in the same league regarding output and overall character.

I have a question about speaker replacement and didn't feel the need to start a new thread since this one already exists...sorry for the hijack...

my question is, if I had to replace(one or both) the speakers in my NX212T what would be a good match for this cab ?... (It doesn't need to be replaced but in the event that it did)

I've been having an issue with the dust cap coming unglued on one of the drivers...I keep fixing it but every so often it needs to be re-glued(which is not a big deal but can be somewhat of a pain in the a$$)..It seems to happen at gigs which is really annoying..

would one of the Eminence offerings be a good replacement (ie. 3012?..or a Delta ?)..I ask about Eminence because the seem to be available everywhere and people who build their own cabs seem to be quite fond of them..especially those who build fearful\fearless\greenboy designs..which are somewhat similar to the NeoX..

any insight on this would be greatly appreciated..

If I remember correctly the NX2-212T uses a custom Faital driver.

the first time the driver started to fart out (because of the un-glued dust cap) I thought I was going to have to replace the driver and was told that it was a proprietary driver..is it one made specifically for Genz? and if I did need to replace it, is it one that's available to the consumer market?..if not, do you think there is an equivalent to it that is readily available...or another by any other brand that would work well with this paticular cab??

I ask because I really like this cab..size,sound, form factor ect...it truly is the perfect cab for me..

BTW I have the first generation NeoX not the NX2

Your drivers in the original NeoX 212 are not made by Faital, they are made by Eminence and are not off the shelf. I can either repair or recone your driver if necessary, I have the parts in stock. No worries. Pm me if you need help.
