Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 Appreciation Thread

I would not compare the Shuttle 9.0 to anything MarkBass has. The 9.0 will annihilate anything they offer.

12:00 on the Master of a MarkBass is all the volume you will ever get, same with the input. The MarkBass amps give the appearance of being louder when clearly they are not. They are wide open at 12:00. With my passive Basses I could never turn the preamp volume on any of my MarkBass amps past the first dot without clipping. With the same Basses I have to set the 9.0 preamp gain and level at 12:00 with no clipping. This sensitivity on the MarkBass amps lead people to believe they are very loud amps until you need just a little more and don't have it. When that pesky limiter kicks in it starts getting really squashy.

Never had my Shuttle cranked all the way but there is a considerable difference in 12:00 and 3:00 and both are louder than all the MarkBass amps I have owned and played.

Now I could see where your drivers might not can take what the 9.0 dishes out or you had some serious issues with the power supply of the building.

Like i said the basses i played were passive. American p and j basses. So it was not an input signal issue. The sound volume drop was the gb 9 itself. I did not turn the amp off between sets, i just muted it.

I don't think you saw %80 of what I wrote, I'll keep it short. Also there is a ? in there, if you answer it we can rule something out:

Overall Volume Level: Your pre amp should be set higher. Like I said your pre is lower than mine and I play active (should be the other way around), try turning it up. I had the same issue when I first started with the amp, turn those knobs.

Volume Drops: Did you mess with eq or boost switches while playing? this can cause volume shifts.

GB has the best service, explore what I explained and then call them if there is still a problem. This amp brings the thunder if you use it right. Well unless it is malfunctioning, then you need to talk to the best amp service in the industry and call GB.

Maybe its just a bum unit? These things happen and GB is a GREAT company to get info / service from. Jeff and crew truly stand by their equipment.

I don't have my setup too different from others hear and let me tell you, its LOUD.

GAIN : 9:00 or even 7:00
Volume : 3:00 to 5:00
EQ : Mostly Flat
Bass Extension : IN
Master : Dimed

Depending on newness of strings or if I just want sizzle, Ill hit the bright switch on.

One thing I really dig, the midrange is very well voiced. Its humpy like other mid range controls. I think its a narrower Q than others so you can boost 150, or even 300 and get a nice cut, not that..ugly boxy sound.

Maybe it's the tube as another TBer said. When I got mine (new) the tube was loose, probably during shipping. I didn't have that symptom, more crackling and popping, but perhaps a loose connection is wreaking havoc with the input signal.

Could be a Tube. Unfortunately they don't make them like they used to. Too bad Blackburn Tube Tech went into Bankruptcy. Everyone was loving their new reinvention of the famed Mullard ECC83.

I immediately installed a NOS 1955 Mullard Long Plate ECC83 into my Shuttle 9.0 when I got it.

I have had my 9.0 for somewhere around a year and have not had a minutes trouble out of it. What a great amp.

Since my recent changeover to virtually all EBMM basses, im thinking of trying Genz again.

Im currently contemplating selling my LM3 and going for a Genz amp...maybe even a cab. It all depends what happens with their potentially 'new' amp...although Id rather keep it 3.0/6.0/9.0 sized.

I also thought of waiting to see what's new but I went ahead and got a Shuttle 9. I don't think I'll have any regrets. I don't need any more power and the sounds I want are easy to get with the 9 so I can't think of an amp they could make that would be better for me.

For the most part I would agree, though, little things that may be improved in an update would be nice. Like variable gains on the shape filters.

Regardless, right now the 9.0 is the best amp for me. I'm a bit more stoked on the new Uber cabs. I've been thinking of going Berg or Uber ever since Avatar failed to come out with their 3way 15.

Thats what I was wondering, I caught wind of it in another GB thread. I'd put money on a 9.0 replacement or competitor given the much lower prices reported recently.

the new amp will not replace the Shuttle. Low prices that you see now are due to two things:

* one published low price from a retailer was a misprint and that has been corrected.

* other low prices are because of our pre-holiday specials, which happen every year.

I was just curious what kind and how many cabinets you run with your Shuttle 9.0?? I'm toying with the idea of getting one to power my two (8 Ohm) Markbass HF410 cabinets.

My GB Uber 410 (4 ohm) is IMO a perfect match for the 9.0. It's just small enough to be portable for the small gigs I play but powerful enough (uses the full potential of the 9.0) for just about anything shy of a stadium. And of course the tone is fantastic!
