Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 Appreciation Thread

I used this with my Shuttle 6.0 and Epi UL112's. This would keep the head from vibrating off, for only $2.99 a roll! I still have plenty left!

This stuff works great.

I've had this head for quite a while now and used to leave the shape buttons off and boost a little lows and sometimes a little highs with the EQ knobs. Lately though I've been turning on the high and low shape buttons, cutting a little of the highs and lows a bit in the active EQ section, and using Ed Friendland's suggestions for getting mids (frequency button all the way to the left, boost a little).

Seems to give me more of a full range and detailed sound. Anybody else EQing this way? I know there's no right or wrong way as long as you get a good sound, I'm just curious.

It's hard to get a bad sound out of this amp.

I use to roll with that set up for a while, then removed the LF boom and rocked the MF and HF filters with low eq boost, then no filter with a bit of low boost eq and now I am digging the scoop filter again.

I find a filter straight to the GB with the scoop on is heaven for me right now.

I've never cared for the mid scoop, kind of guts out the Stingray-ness of my Stingray 5. I do like the way that hitting the tube circuit not only adds grit, but also seems to smooth out the clankiness on that bass a bit. I run a Bergantino HT322, and there are definitely some stages where engaging the low boost is not something I'd recommend unless you're wearing adult diapers. ;)

I pulled out my old rack (Alembic F-1X and QSC PLX 1602) the other day, and while the old rig is still a touch louder, the tone of the Shuttle 9 is way better.

I went this route as well, though it wasn't quite so direct. After going through several amps from several different manufacturers I've settled in again with a Shuttle 9.0. I dug the Streamliner (600 & 900) quite a bit but just prefer the Shuttle 9.0 in tone, flexebility, form factor, etc...

I just got the 9.0 today. I love the tone on this thing! My only concern at this point is that I'm running it into a single 8-ohm cabinet (Bag End Q10XB-D). The Bag End is an awesome cabinet, but I'm only getting the 500 watts by doing this. I'd love to get a couple light-weight 210s eventually to take advantage of the full 900 watts, but financially, that's out of the question right now.

Other amps I've had seemed to get loud at a much lower setting on the Master Volume. I haven't had very much opportunity to experiment with this one today. Only about a half-hour. So far I've been putting the Gain around 1:00 pm. Same with the Volume knob next to the Gain. Other settings around 12:00, and the Master Volume around 12:00 or 1:00. Not sure how far I can safely push it. I've never had to go above 10:00 o'clock on my other amps' volume.

Right now I guess I'll just have to experiment to see what settings I like best. I'm not sure when I'll get a chance to play it with the band, since we haven't been doing much lately. So I'm not sure how hard I'll have to push it with a couple guitars and drums in the mix. But wow, what a sweet, creamy tone!

Do any of you guys who use a single 8-ohm cabinet have any trouble getting enough volume in a band setting?

Just remember the gain and volume adjust your signal going into the amp and the master adjusts overall volume. So if you aren't too concerned with tube grind crank the volume and back off the gain a bit or vice versa for more tube influence. Also, boosting the low mids around 200hz will increase your perceived volume as well. You don't have to worry about pushing it too hard IMO. I've never had one go thermal and I've run a signal Acme B2 on a loud gig, the can suffered long before the amp. Also, the amp is designed to clip "gracefully" which it totally does in my opinion so when you ate really pushing it you don't hit a wall as with other solid state power sections, but enter clipping subtly. You can monitor this by paying attention to the light on the pre side as well as the clip light on the power side. Both o these blinking on your strongest notes is fine an recommended depending on your tonal preference.

Where you run the Volume knob in the gain section has a lot to do with the output of your bass. It won't hurt to dime the volume, adjust gain(tube) to taste, then master to wherever you need it.

My SR5 doesn't really have a high output, I dime the Volume. My 55-02 does have high output and I dial the Volume back to about Noon. Just make sure your hitting the pre hard enough and there will be plenty of volume.

A good starting point is both Gain and Volume at noon and adjust from there. The EQ is also powerful and can make a big difference in volume.

My small rig is a GK Neo 112-II and it's gets plenty loud.

Thanks guys. That's reassuring. I've always had a ton of power, so I watched the clip light carefully. Good to know this baby likes to be pushed a bit. Like I said, I really like the tone a lot!

Also, if not stated above, remember that the 'clip' light is really a 'limiting circuit engaged' light. If the power amp clip light blinks even frequently, you are still OK, and just starting to hit that sort of 'tube emulation' sort of soft limiting. Of course, if you find the 'clip light' stays on a lot, then you are probably going to be hitting the hard compression limit of the amp.

I know many Bag Ends are very high efficiency (i.e., very mid present voicing that sounds quite loud per watt). However, I remember that particular 410 to really open up with significant watts, so who knows if the Shuttle 9 will be enough.

Your only real other options IMO (without totally breaking the bank) would be one of the lightweight Carvin full sized heads.

I really really like my Shuttle 9.0 but I just sold my Demeter VTBP-201s and QSC PLX 1602 which I haven't used since I got my Shuttle. Well I fired up the Demeter and QSC and that rig sounded much more "open" than the shuttle. Does that make sense? I really had to do a lot of knob twiddling to get close but close is as close as I could get.
Can the tube be swapped out to try different ones?

Its been said over and over again, but bears repeating because its important.....

Unlike the master volume on many amps, (Markbass, Gk, SWR, etc) where the amp is 90% all out with the master at noon, Genz chooses to use a more accurate pot (knob) that gives a more even amount of output the whole length of the turn of the knob. I've used my 9.0 with the tube gain at 11:00, gain @ 5:00, and the master full out at 6:00. It was clean and freakin loud through a Bergantino AE210. I thought it was going to be a much smaller gig. oops.
