Genz Benz Streamliner; Part 4

Just unplugged my LEPJ5 from the SL600 & Glockenklang 410. Man, big ass bottom! Warmed my LEPJ up with nice punch. Thought I would never put my Tecamp Puma 1000 away, but right now, it's chilling zipped up in its softcase.

I'm curious of the "scoop" is coming from the cab or the amp....I can't handle scooped mids.

I'm sure that IP310 is unreal. Those IP's are still tops for me.

I don't want to give you the wrong impression. This doesn't sound scooped to the point where it would be detrimental to your spot in a mix. There's just a slight polite-ness to the mids that smooths everything out REEEEEEEELY well. If you like the IPs, you will like this set-up man.

That said, I think that is coming more from the cab than the amp. It's easily EQ'd away. This rig actually reminds me quite a bit of the tone I got with my IP112 stack waaaay back in the day:p

I have a feeling that cab will open up a bit for you too.

Damn...that sounds like a winning combo.

The AE212 will open up a bit more with about an hour or so of play on it. A little more low end extension. Man use that mid control at 600 and bump those mids. That is what I am looking at doing when mine gets here.

Dropping the compression thang is another notice of mine as well. I always ran a very mildly set EBS multicomp, and I dropped it with the SL. I also think the description of "polite" in the mids instead of scooped is right on, though as stated can be easily eq'ed out to a powerful punch. Great unit.

I almost think that the highs are so silky and airy and the lows extend deep that you may get the impression that is is scooped .
But i really dont get the mid scoop from this amp..
Just an Airy top side on this thing.. Like a real nice expensive high end studio preamp in a way.

Yea I think you're right. The highs are so smooth and airy it almost makes it seem like there's a gap between them and the massive lows. My ear expects more outrageous mids to be there, but instead, they are just "there".

I am REALLY happy with this combination! It's rare that a piece of gear exceeds the hype :bassist:

Sure thang boss!

Just moved her up into my office for practice rig usage until her first gig. My beloved Callowhill MDM6 in the foreground :bassist:

But thats still the definition of mid scooped, big highs and big lows leaves somewhat of a valley in between. Dont get me wrong, its a nice sounding head and Im still experimenting with it, but flat through the wrong cab and its a mess. For example, this flat and an HT322. and its kinda a disaster. Huge lows, I mean dropping the bass to 9:00 lows, upper mids very soft, and an interesting quality to the highs. I can see why Ken loves this though an AE410 as it kinda fills in the holes. This head is much happier through the NV215 where the stronger mids and rolled off bass response help.
That being said the eq section is powerful and can help get you out of trouble with a cab that may be somewhat of a mismatch. If the db750 was voiced like this with its limited eq, it would be borderline unusable with some cabs.
So far out of all my amps the earliest comparison would be to a db750 with better eq, silkier highs but a softer attack.
It also kinda reminds me of an Orange AD200 on its cleanest settings. FAT, smooth, pillowy but as Ed showed on his clip, on its grittier settings its definitely capable of punching through

Just when I thought I was in....hearing that it sounds like the Orange makes me think "no way this thing has enough top end extension for me."

KJ's clips seem pretty contradictory to the Orange tone; to me.

It has big his and big lows yes.. but to me they are just extended out on the line.. Is it Flat? maybe not.. maybe so . I dont have an OS..but flat isnt always a good thing IMO.

I think the point is that the amp extends cleanly to the lows and highs extremes. much like the way a studio preamp does.. not that they are boosted though.. the extended ends of the spectrum are just there instead of being truncated by hi pass filter etc..
So in theory if the top and bottom are not rolled off by filters as some amps are.( not saying this on is or not just saying) that does not mean it is scooped,, just that the freqs are not missing.

I feel the same way about the Orange amp.. its good for what it does though..... the top is rolled off and the bottom is mid burpy. like the bass tone on the song All Right NOW. by FREE.
The SL does not sound like that to me. .at least not through my speaker cabs. The SL is WIDE.. and a new word for the top on this SL900. AIRY..

The orange sounds like the top end is rolled off quite a bit to me....
