Genz Benz Streamliner; Part 4

has anyone done direct A-B Comparisons of the SL900 to an LMII or LMIII?

Brief A/B with an LMIII through a Berg AE410... pretty much what you would expect. Streamliner was deeper, smoother through the mids, and killed the LM in volume. The LM could go from inherently "textured" in the mids to a warm sound via the VLE, but it didn't have the depth of tone that the SL has. LMIII has "more EQ", but frankly I found (and continue to find) the Streamliner's EQ network to be incredibly well thought out and extremely usable.

Ditto with my experience with my LMII!

I just finished up a wonderful hang with the great Mike Harrington (I always am amazed at the amazing players in Detroit... Fredericks at the house yesterday, Harrington today... who knows who tomorrow!). He brought over his Thunderfunk 750a. Great head... all the good of the 550b plus a more open, less compressed low end.

TOTALLY different voicing from the Streamliner. Volume capability seemed about the same (both amps impressive), but the Streamliner had massively more low end, a much smoother inherent mid response, and a sweeter top end. The TF750a was tighter and punchier, and sounded more like a much bigger Markbass F500 (we A/B'd those two heads, and while the TF750b not surprisingly topped the F500 in volume and 'open low end', the general tone profile was quite similar). I would guess the Shuttle Max 9 would be the Genz product of choice for those who are using Thunderfunks but want to lighten the load or whatever.

I would guess the Streamliner 900 would be more appropriate for the DB750 guys looking to lighten the load versus the TF750a, which really is a different thing.... no give, no really tubey big low end... more of a very nice, warm, very punchy, tight, loud amp. I actually dug it a lot, and it was reasonably small and relatively lightweight.

With the P Bass, it was ALL Streamliner though IMO. With our J basses, more 'two different flavors of loud and good':)

Just called Red Dirt Brothers Guitars about the SL900, at least 2 weeks.
Ye Olde Music Shoppe is way backed up too

I'm in no rush... once they are in stock I'll pull the trigger, in the meantime I'll keep reading reviews & listening to clips.

The Music Store in Tulsa OK. has one each, 600 and 900 in inventory. IDK if they ship but I would imagine so. Did not ask price. 888.503.7196
Good Luck

someone, I forget who, asked for a photo of Streamliner in gigskinz small bag:

here it is:

Did you play it thru the AE212?
I gigged mine with AE410 last weekend, will be using AE212 tonight for this smaller room

Ukiah....In discussing this issue with Don he thought that adding the extra 6.5 driver would be the ticket for me because:

1. I'm going to use this cab with a P-Bass strung with flats. The cab will be sealed and I want to make sure I get enough note articulation on the mids....

2. What I'm ultimately going to do is get two of these cabs and when stacked I will have (4) 6.5 mids in a vertical array..that will help achieve a wider dispersion of the mids and...

3. He wants to make sure that I have enough power handing capability in the mid drivers when pairing either the single cab or two of them stacked with the SL900 which is rated output 500W@8ohms and 900W@4ohms.

He's done this configuration before and it has worked very well indeed.

I would agree. When I first fired up the S900, I thought it was too rich in the low end for my taste. I also was used to running my eq fairly flat (though I dialed treble and upper mids down on the GK). After I worked with the amp for awhile, did a lot of back and forth between amps and basses, I found the sweet spots for my ears and got used to the way the amp behaved. A good tube amp needs to be learned - it ain't just a set of knobs.

Yup. The more that I played with the Streamliner...and tweaked the gain/volume/master settings...the more giddy I became...it was getting to that point where my touch was causing a different nature of response depending on settings...and it harkened me back to the days of all tube amps...I found the mid frequencies to be perfect-different settings for different basses or tonal goals...but it was all there...and I didn't miss a sweepable mid frequency knob at all. As Ken noted, the controls all have a silky, high-quality feel...while I do love the detented controls on the Shuttles, these controls seemed more in keeping with the spirit of the Streamliner and the power to be had in just a few degrees of arc was most welcome...wysiwyg...
The more I play this thing, the more in love with it that I become...and I am totally impressed at what the folks at Genz Benz have served up with this series.

Woooooooooooooooooooooo! Gotta call him in the AM and make sure I'm getting one. I ordered on like the 7th so I am assuming I'm getting one of those.

That's when I ordered mine and I'm definitely getting one shipped to me.

He said he usually gets his shipments in the afternoon so rather than mail them out at the end of the day and have them sit in a hot UPS warehouse all weekend he'll ship 'em Monday morning.

Thanks a lot for the heads up. Just got off the phone and my SL900 will be shipping out tomorrow! Same deal as red dirt and YOMS except no wait time. They have the 600 also in stock, but I guess they only had one of each. So whoever wants a 600 with no waiting time, go get it!
