Genz Benz Streamliner; Part 4

Thanks a lot for the heads up. Just got off the phone and my SL900 will be shipping out tomorrow! Same deal as red dirt and YOMS except no wait time. They have the 600 also in stock, but I guess they only had one of each. So whoever wants a 600 with no waiting time, go get it!

Hey, no problem.. Glad someone was able to get one without a wait, and what sounds like a good deal. Someone else needs to grab up that 600! :hyper:

How far up is your volume? If you have room to spare it could probably push more. My headphone amp is ALWAYS at 75%+ with my crappy pair (most like under 80 ohms)
Is the tone through the headphones as good as the amp through the cab?

Tunaman, I can't remember for sure. IIRC I have some headroom left. I don't remember for sure, but don't think I was pushing anything. As far as sound, with my cans the cab sounds the best for sure. But I have never spent much money on headphones so that is understandable. I do like the ability to have the tunes I am working on and my bass through one speaker system, whether the headcans or the cabinet.

I have purchased 3 of the GB micro heads, at least 2 from YOMS. Great folks and great price! Within a few months when supply catches up with demand they get even cheaper on E-bay. I was planning to hang till then (sub 700.00 for SL900), I bet.
Look at the price of shuttle 9's now. More likely I will call YOMS tomorrow and be mad at myself in 6 months cause they are goin for 650.00

My current headphone amp can't handle my 250 ohm headphones, too much resistance. What would be the best headphone ohm load for the SL 900? 32, 80 or 250?
I wonder if I plug in an ipod into the Aux in if that would be amplified at all? The manual leads me to say no... I'd probably need a low resistance set of cans then 32 or 80 ohms
Any help?

Streamliners and Shuttles can drive from 32 ohm-600 ohm headphones with no problem, note that many 600 ohm phones are not capable of reproducing large amounts of bass however and some headphones in genertal do a better job of bass than others at higher levels.

Aux in is buffered and amplified to nominal "bus" level and then mixed with the bass signal and amplified some more.

For those with tecamp pumas, can you tells us more on how the SL900 compare?

I have the Puma500, which is a touch fatter and warmer than the Puma1000. Since the Puma1000 can't be bridged into 4ohms, hard to do a real volume comparison with the SL900.

The SL900 is, obviously, a bit louder than the Puma500. Again, it is hard for most of the smaller cabs that I use (4 ohm 410's and 212's) to really use much more power than 500 or 600 watts, so I can't really do a very good 'maximum volume test'. I assume with two large 8ohm cabs, the SL900 would pull ahead.

Tonally, when you run the SL900 clean, they are in a similar tone universe. The Puma extends much lower in the bass, and much higher into the upper treble than the SL900 (and most other amps as well), but again, that isn't necessarily a good thing. That super deep bass uses up headroom and really can stress the drivers, and that beautiful upper treble pingy sizzle can get a bit lost in the cymbals in a mix.

That being said, they are more similar than different... bit, fat, warm low end (with the SL900's hi pass filtering making that low end more controllable... but still massivly bigger than the Shuttle 9), very low distortion, smooth midrange (at least when the SL900 is run clean), and plenty of sparkle up top (although the nature of the treble response is different, with the Puma being almost the definition of hi fi up there, as we use that term on TB, and the SL900 being much 'sweeter and tubey/organic' up top).

The Puma has the edge in 'quality feel', but at $1,400 new in the US, it should.

If you have a large 8ohm cab, the current Puma1000 is pretty darn impressive, since you get all that wattage wumping into 8ohms when bridged. However, for most of us who use two smaller 8ohm cabs or one larger 4ohm, and given the price, the SL900 is a pretty easy decision!

Of course, the SL900 can grind and snarl a bit too, which would be an added bonus for some. However, run clean, it is definitely in that 'Glock Heartrock, Puma' tone universe of very big down low (with some tubey warmth) and very pure in the mids and crisp up top.

Very impressive amp, and powerful enough to run virtually any 4ohm cab to, for all practical purposes, full volume.

So, depending on the sound quality, Ken may be letting me borrow his SL900 for Saturday's web cast of my bands gig (we're not doing the web cast, it's done by the bar or something).
Here's the link for it:
http://livedetroit.tv/LiveDetroit/BarM.html
Click on "the Blue Goose" bar.
We start at 9:30. If ya care, I'm playing both Friday and Saturday.
My rig will be my 9.0 thru a Bag End S15D-X.
Sadowsky JJ5 & my V-Bass equipped PRS 4.
If the sound quality doesn't suck, Ken will bring his SL900 down for my first set and you guys can here it "real time" on the gig.

This sounds pretty cool. I will definitely check you out if I can.

I would assume that since the Shuttle and ShuttleMax 6.0/12.0 amps also don't have that nand the Shuttle 9.0 does, that is strictly related to the power output and getting the module/s up to 900W.

correct. Our 900 watters have it. This is one reason why our amps don't go thermal.

thanks for the assist.:bassist:

Just double checking, thanks Agedhorse & hasbeen, this is REALLY big for me... the SL as a headphone amp is 95% of my current usage... at least a hour daily. I have my headphones up for sale & had some offers but don't have to sell them now & take the loss! The streamliner tone in my headphone amp & can push my 250 ohm cans? Awesome!!!! Ordering ASAP now.
