Genz Benz Streamliner; Part 4

I was using a Carvin LB75W 5 string active bass (18 volt), so I was very surpirsed by this. I didn't expect to have to go that far at all after what I'd read on part 1 through part 4 of these threads.
-----
When I cranked the volume to 3 O'Clock, it was loud, but not as loud as I expected. The drummer is extremely loud. He wraps the ends of his drumsticks with electrical tape to make a sort of mini-baseball bat handle to make sure while he is swinging with fury that they don't go flying out of his hands.

Two things:

1) active electronics and preamp voltage doesn't necessarily equate with bass ouput. My passive P-bass is on-par with my Roscoes (18v). That said I don't get grind until I engage the gain switch. But that's why it is there :D

2) I'd last about one song with a drummer like that and then head for the door. imho guys who can play quiet with intensity are worth their weight in gold. Guys who whack as hard as they can are a dime a dozen and should instead get whacked upside the head until they can spell the word "dynamics."

As for the loudness, as others have said you need to push more air, and don't compare to other volume tapers. A lot of amps have their master volume with most of the "throw" in the first quarter turn or so, making people think they are "really loud." GB uses a more realistic taper.

I ordered an SL900 today. Should have it week after next. We should get together with our cabs. I would like to revisit the Neox 212 since it's been awhile since playing one. I'm curious how it sounds next to my AE212 that I've grown fond of. I'd also like to check out some of your Chi-loaded Laklands if you still have them. I've also got an RH450 if you want to see it

Sounds interesting, Jason... With Mardi Gras getting into full swing here in Mobile, it may be a few weeks before we can pull this together.

Well my SL600 has been sitting in Auckland for the last week awaiting customs clearance. I don't know if you guys have seen the news but Christchurch (where I live) has been hit by another huge earthquake. Our CBD is destroyed and NZ Post has suspended all deliveries to ChCh till the end of the month. Guess I have to wait a bit longer, but no matter, got bigger worries at the moment. :-(

Wow, hope everything is okay.

Hi Ed, nah unfortunately it's not. Between 50-75 % of the buildings in the city will be demolished and the entire eastern suburbs are wrecked. Roads, power, water & sewer are destroyed. Luckily I'm on the western side of the city and we missed the damage from this one (our damage was the 7.1 in September).
Been hanging out for the Streamliner since I saw your review weeks ago.
Managed to get one to the country but stymied at the last moment by Mother Nature. Doh!!!!
I'm sure when it arrives I'll forget all about the destruction and create some seismic waves of my own. :-)

was only at about 9 or 10 O'clock on the master volume with the headphones though and they were way louder than the surgeon general recommends at that level. I would be amazed if you have problems pushing any headphones with the onboard juice.

Thanks Fiya
My mixer is the same way, I'm really loud in my regular cans at 10. My 250 ohms is loud at 1pm

My Eden Navigator... my reg cans need 2 oclock b4 being loud, the 250 cans need max volume to be okay loud at 5 oclock.

Looks like the SL is more on par with my mixer volume than my Eden Navigator. This now gives me the confidence to sell my 10 year old PHA-1 Raven Labs headphone amp I use daily as the Streamliner will replace it! Awesome.

I wonder why the difference between my mixer & the Eden Navigator?

Sboh: Hope all is well there my friend. The pictures they send us on CNN don't look pretty. Good luck.

OK...sorry for the OT, but what is that Dog? It looks like a Keeshund on sterroids. .....beautiful.

I had an Alaskan Malamute as a kid.

She's my late, great Akita, Sambuka. She was the dawg of my life, and weighed more than my wife. She had long hair, which the misguided, eugenics-obsessed breeders are trying to eliminate from the race:rollno: As my dad used to say:"Humans are just intelligent enough to be dangerous to ourselves and other living things".

Derail done.

Once again, IME, SL900 is plenty loud even into a good 8 Ohm cab.

No doubt! I'm getting the heck out of town for a full 6 days during Mardi Gras. Won't be back until late Ash Wednesday! I'm fully jaded to it to say the least! You playing any of the balls or parades?

Doing a fly date with my SL900 tonight and tomorrow. Thinking of getting a case made for this and the guitar players pedal boards for these gigs. Mmmmmmmmm

There are a lot of options...including having a case made.

Another option:
I found the bag for my Shuttle 9.0 was sliding off my shoulder when lugging everything else around.

For just over $100, I found a really well-made, light but extremely heavy duty (and waterproof) case that is often used by paramedics, field photographers, etc. Very well made/high end.

Was able to customize the cubed foam myself for a perfect fit....and I've already measured....the S900 will also fit nicely in it (with new foam) when I finally sell my Shuttle and pull the trigger on the S900. :p

Might not be the best option for a big, heavy amp, but awesome for these.

Oh, brand & model is Pelican Storm im2400 -a.k.a. Hardigg Storm brand, same model #.

I don't know the ohms of my headphones:
http://www.extremeheadphones.com/products.html
EX-29's- like Paul Gilbert wears, but with the STM 900's gain at 9 o'Clock, Volume at noon and master at 9 o'clock- these are plenty loud and IMO can get stupid loud pretty quick with master or gain cranked beyond that- which defeats my purpose of actually protecting my hearing. YMMV

Thanks Fiya

Tony O. and The Smokin' Toasters are serving as one of the "Live Truck Bands" as part of the parade this Monday night (02-28-2011). I'll be there pulling them with trailer in tow. It's always fun to see the parade from the inside-out!

Thats a nice case...

I have a Storm Case I use as well.
They are IMO on par with Pelican cases, but cheaper.
I don't recall the model of mine off hand, it's a little bit bigger than yours. Mine also has wheels on one end and a telescoping handle which makes it nice for airports and such.

I can fit my 9.0, a few cables my tuner, compressor and some other stuff like batteries allen wrenches etc..
I throw up a pic a little later.

I'd look into one Kirk, they are nice.

A little something about 4 and 8 ohm cabinets, as this comes up regularly and I get PM's about it too...

While many manufacturers strive to make their 4 and 8 ohm versions sound as close as possible, it should not be automaticly assumed that they will be identical. In fact, any time a designer alters one parameter of a speaker, others will need to be fuine tuned to bring the overall performance back to the original.

Changing the impedance is not as simple as plugging a different voice coil into the speaker, because the different voice coil will need to have a different wire gauge, winding length, inductance, sensitivity, DCR, weight, etc. All of these parameters, will need to be fine tuned along with the rest of the parameters to get as close to the same voicing as possible. As had as we try, they will not be identical. It should also be noted that some manufacturers don't even try to get their different drivers to sound the same, which is why you as a player should be careful when making assumptions, and where other player's experiences can help.

Also, an 8 ohm cabinet's sensitivity will be roughly 1/2 that of a 4 ohm cabinet when compared voltage-wise, and since all power amps are essentially an "ideal" voltage source, when you swap cabinets yo will experience an effective coubling of oiutput power when going from 8 ohms to 4 ohms without changing any of the controls on the amp. Perhaps this is what some of you have been experiencing?

Very informative -- thanks!

Thanks for that
Have always assumed that the same model driver would sound exactly the same regardless of impedence
