Genz Benz Streamliner Part 9

I hadn't seen that thread - thx! The TC 212 really responds differently (with the Streamliner) than my old Avatar 2x10 did... it was very noticeable last night. I had dialed in a good clean sound in my living room yesterday, but of course that means nothing compared to club conditions. By set 2 last night, I had begun to figure things out, and was swooning by the end of the night. Very low gain, master at about 9:00, and volume kinda cranked... tight, spanky tone with definition.

Thanks! I got it from Bass Central a few years ago - replaced a stolen Lakland 55-94. I like the MM about 100x more It's the standard honeyburst (not the "honey roasted" thing they're doing now).

If you are looking to reduce some af the gain and tighten up the bottom the JAN Phillips 5751 is most definately the way to go. I got mine from Tube Depot for 40 bucks. For now I still have the stock tubes in V2 and V3, but I think I'm going to get the reissue Tung Sols and give them a try in those spots.

I just played a gig in a small dive bar last night. I had to carry the room without FOH support. I just cranked the gain, and enjoyed the TRUE tube goodness that this amp produces. I just LOVE this amp.

I agree there are probably better 5751s then the sovtek I put in mine, but I would say the biggest difference is due to the lower gain from the 5751 and any difference in 5751s is probably more subtle then the change from the AX7 to 5751. High Pass Filter - it lets the higher frequencies through while limiting the lower, muddier unwanted ones.

Agreed - the 30% or so gain reduction from the 5751 is what you are really after. I guess the thing that I try to really get my head around is, it is pretty universally accepted that the vintage tubes are superior to the new production ones, but most of the vintage tubes that you would really want are getting very pricey. Some of these new production tubes must be good so how close do they get? 70% of the way there? 80%, 90? I don't know. Then the question is in a live band setting how noticeable would the difference actually be?

I can't imagine anyone could tell the difference in a live situation (though I am sure someone will say they can), and a great, great many would not hear it in a recording.

Actually didn't dig it so much w the XLTs, which I used for almost twenty years. Kinda brought out all the flaws and I ended up selling a 210XLT I bought in Jan 4 months later for some NEOX, whole world better.

May want to try alternatives before buying.

I played my STM-900 through a friend's 210XLT, and it was ok. Would work fine. However, I think my new RS212 is a much better fit.

Thought I would give you guys a heads up on a good deal on a Streamliner 900. I bought my 600 from these guys back in June and sort of makes me sick as this is only $30 more than I paid for the 600 but I am very happy with the 600. No affiliation whatsoever.

I use a STM-900 with an UBBER 212. Settings are gain 1 volume 11 bass 12 mid 1 mid freq 2.5 treble 2 master 10 or 11. Gain light on if using passive bass. Sounds huge.

Wow I don't know how you have your bass knob at 12. If I have mine anything over about 8-9 o'clock it's just way too boomy. Maybe it's my bass, but even there I cut the bass to about 1/3rd of what it has traditionally been set to with other heads.

It works out for me because I'm primarily a pick player that likes alot of low end in my tone - in fact, the Streamliner, ShuttleMax, M-pulse 600, and 700/1001 rb-II heads are some of the very few that put out enough low end for my taste, without having to work too hard at it...

I went through a Joe Osborn phase in college. Playing dead La Bella flats with a pick, but going for a near-fingerstyle tone, took some fairly offbeat EQ settings.
