im really bad at figuring out power things so forgive the dumb question

the mag800 can be run in 4/8ohms or 2.xohms.

if i have it set to 4/8 ohms, running into only one 12-3, it is operating at 8ohms, not 4, right? so its feeding 400watts into the cabinet (rated at 350watts at 8ohms)?

If i connect another 12-3, will each cabinet receive 400 watts, or will the 8ohm load of 400watts be split into 200 watts each?

Neither rating is quite as simple as it seems to be... someone else can tackle that if they want.

let me just say that as long as you're reasonable in your use of the amp/cab, you should be fine. I have always used a head with a higher wattage output than my cab rating and have never had a problem.

two 8 ohm cabs = 4 ohms so the head will be putting out its full wattage.

At 4/8 ohms the Magellan 800 is capable of supplying 400 watts rms to one 12-3 cab and 800 watts to two 12-3 cabs. As long as you don't turn up to ridiculous levels, trying to push those cabs, you should be fine.

Now if you are not comfortable with that, you could also select 2.67 ohms on the back of the amp and that should bring the Magellan 800 down to about 500 watts rms into a 4 ohm load meaning both 12-3 cabs would only be getting about 250 watts each.

But again you should be fine with the switch at 4 ohms as those cabs were made to go with that amp.

I can agree here with Loring.
I don't usually set the input gain hot enough to drive the preamp Clip LED to illuminate. I set it in the 11 - noon range (even my Sadowsky won't clip the front end) and then I set the Master to desired volume. I've told Roger he should rate those dang preamps in Horsepower;). My normal setting is to keep the GAIN and MASTER controls in the same "ballpark" range. Unless setting the DRIVE channel GAIN, I usually don't set the GAIN setting higher than the Master. But that's just me.

Agree, Loring knows his stuff! We always like your input as well Jeff ;-)
You raise an important point about the input signal coming from the bass and its the reason why I didn't jump in earlier on this question.

If you are using FOH support then set up your signal so they get what the sound engineer needs and use your master for your stage levels.

My personal settings is pretty much as Jeff describes and I am playing a Sadowsky. I set my gain around 12 noon and set the drive channel to match the same sound level. Then Master is set for either stage volume or to fill club if I'm not using PA support.

I set my GAIN by trying to hit the Input LED on the hardest hit.. Then i back it off a little.. I don't mind if i see an occasional LED clip light. That preamp had MUCHO headroom...
Sometimes that means my input GAIN may approach 2 or 3 o'clock depending on my bass.

I guess my methodology comes from many years of using a Preamp/power amp setup, where the M.O. is to max the power amp and use the preamp for volume. This amp has also allowed me to drastically reduce the amount of EQ involved in getting to the tone and volume level I prefer. Fingers or slapping, and I've still never seen the clip light!

I love this rig so much, I don't really wanna mess with anything...bahahaha!

For folks that think about stands for your genzler cabs here’s a neat thing about some stands. Here is a pick I posted a while back with my 12 on a stand ...

Here is the trick:
This Amp stand that has adjustable height. Note you can reverse the arms and it changes the shape amp it will hold. Usually the arms are very tall and less deep. Thats great for guitar amps. With this stand I figured I can reverse the direction of the arm to be less high but deeper. I find this much better for my more squarish bass amps and cabs. Center of gravity is actually moved closer in, more stable.

I've got to say that I've never considered this. I'd test that outside if you do try it. Save a claim on your homeowner's insurance. Hope you like the 410.
