Genzler Amplification Club

Question for those in the know. I'm wanting to get a tuner pedal to use with my Genzler 800. Does the Genzler have a tuner out and how does that work? Will the tuner pedal stay on all the time?

I use a Korg Pitchblack Tuner pedal in front of the amp, and at the very beginning of my pedal chain. Most tuner pedals also mute you while the tuner is active, which I find very handy for switching effects between songs, etc.

We all know and have talked about how the Magellan 800 sounds with bass and a cab, and it is fantastic. I want to talk about the cool sounds the amp makes inside itself during the power up sequence, cing, conk, zzink. Then power down, ting tong. It is neat
Mr.Genzler can I ask what I am hearing powering on first, second then third sound? I understand if you need to keep it a secret, like the spit corner. :smug:

Adjacent to the Secret Spit Corner (who's opening for "cing, conk, zzink" at Coachella) you'll find one of these:

The cab is absolutely incredible. Has better bass than my 1518 trace cab. Less than half the size and easily as loud and has more presence. Looking at them I would not have thought it possible. Really looking forward to the Magellan.

I was using my BA12-3 with a Shuttle 9.0 and upgraded to the Magellan. I had been very happy with the shuttle but the Magellan is in another class altogether. Depending upon what you've been using for a head, you very well may find the Magellan as much an upgrade as was the cab. That little rig is more than enough for any setting I play and sounds phenomenal.

Will be retiring a trace AH250. Great head but I might as well go all genzler. Totally buying it sight unseen. I did watch more than a few YouTube vids and read a lot here. Came down to the subway, microtubes and the Magellan. Tried the subway and it's a great little amp. I'm sure the Magellan will be somewhat similar.

Amazing how much punch these small class d amps can throw out there.

Interesting question. Nothing super mysterious. It is the relays within the auto sensing power supply --- sensing the correct voltage requirements and then conforming to the required voltage. This is how the amp can be used anywhere in the world without voltage switches or changing fuses.
Your also probably hearing the preamp relay switching on turn on too. Thanks for using the Magellan 800!

OK, guys...talk me down.

Prefatory note 1: I'm half kidding, but that implies half serious too.
Prefatory note 2: don't read this Jeff

So I'm visiting my friendly neighborhood retailer, the one who sold me my 350 head and 12-3 array, considering my second 12-3 array and whatever else I could justify. I bought the new stuff on a bit of a lark, to be honest, trading in my Markbass LMIII head, 1x15 and 2x10 cabinets. I really wasn't looking for something new but a side-by-side in various combos simply blew the MB stuff away. Combined with a glowing endorsement from the salesperson and my ears, I went for it.

I am chatting with a different salesperson, a bass player in fact, and I tell him about my recent purchase. Well, to my surprise he says something like "that's nice." "That's nice?" I think to myself. I was expecting a "wow, that stuff is awesome" or at least, "very cool gear." So I ask him "what's up? Do you not like the Gentler stuff?" He says that a) he's not a big fan of 12s and b) that I should have looked at the Mesa Subway gear; either the 2x10s or if I'm into 12s, the 12. They also make a cool 15. Plus their stuff is super durable and light.

So, here I am with my recent purchase, which I really like, thinking that I should have auditioned the Mesa gear.

Many of you will say, "love your new gear, it's awesome. There's always something else or something new." I get that, I really do. I didn't listen to the Mesa stuff while I was there and I've read things here that compare the two. Of course, it stands to reason, you usually read reviews in this group that lean to Genzler. I'm guessing the inverse is true in the Mesa group pages.

I will most likely keep, and love, my Genzler stuff. It still blew away gear that I thought I loved. But did I miss out? If so, in what way?

I say all this with peace and love...please don't respond just to tell me I'm stupid for even thinking this. It's fresh from today and I'll probably even regret posting it tomorrow morning. But oh well...we're all friends...right?

Well I think there are so many manufacturers of gear out there that are great. IMO you should try everything you can and find what best suits you. If you like many of us here love your genzler stuff that's great. If you try the mesa stuff or whatever else you may try and find you like that better no worries. That's why this site has such a great used selling site. I tell this same thing to my Hi-Fi clients, just because I like something best doesn't mean one of the other guys working with me won't like something else better. Trust your ears and let that decide for you. Not some sales guy or us or anyone else.

Did the salesman know that
a) Genzler makes 10s.
b) Genzler stuff is durable
c) Genzler stuff is Lightweight, Genzler actually pioneered lightweight bass rigs..
I did an A/B/C with Mesa, Genzler and Bergantino.. I bought the Genzler.. Just my preference. Its the easiest amp that i have ever owned to get a tone on quickly ...
This year alone i've flown my MG800 in baggage, and racked it up for over 50 dates so far being handled by road dogs. .. Bounced in trucks, hand carried my myself in cars, and baggage handlers. Not one issue.
Mesa makes good stuff but i don't like the new 800 amp or 800 +... Many do... But i don't... I do love their walkabout though.. It's the best bass amp they made except for the old tube 400 in my opinion.. They should go back and do what they do well..

Well, then, do what I did: Get both and mix-n-match!

I've got the MG800 and the little 10-2. Also have a Subway 112/115 setup for my "big rig". I've had and used a D800 and D800+. I prefer the MG800 because I feel: 1) It's got the edge, ever so slightly, on clean power when be used as a power amp. 2) I like the uncolored tone if I hit the Input pretty hard (but not clipping). 3) I've got outboard gear to get me in color/character area of the D800(+).

The little 10-2 works great as my monitor at my church gig and it lives at the church. I've used it on an upright gig and it also perfect for the type of cocktail-hour gigs I do on URB. The SW cabs sound just as fantastic as my bigger rig. I dig that meaty, throaty tone they produce. Plus, a 1x15 just works for me size wise. I can kick it back and use it outdoors as a monitor on bigger gigs or use it on smaller outdoor gigs if the FOH is limited.

Sooooo...My point? You did good, @dwellers. Get what works for you and don't worry about what the sales guy says. The Genzler stuff is top notch. And IMO is a great value for the quality, in both construction and tone, of the product.

Thank you for the great replies.

I've always played combinations of 15s and 10s (G-K, Eden, Markbass) my whole life so part of this is just new territory. I'm sure this won't be the last head/cab I own either. And like I said, Jeff's gear blew my MB rig away, something purchased only a few years ago after a lot of research.

The salesperson just injected his own thoughts/needs rather than ask me about what I use it for, what I like, didn't like etc. Never suggested I try the Mesa or offer thoughts about what options I had (return, swap, etc.). So, not a very good salesperson imho.

Further, communicating with Jeff has been amazing. I value customer service and Jeff goes above and beyond. That's worth a lot to me, especially if (and I'm not saying things are) equal.

Next time I'm in the store I'll give a listen and do some side-by-side. Chances are good that it will confirm my purchase. And if it doesn't, oh well. I can always rob a bank. ;)

You going to trust someone that judges just on speaker size? :smug:

Keep in mind that you have the Magellan 350 and the Mesa Subway head is 800 watts so it will have more power to it. Try comparing it with the Magellan 800.
I also made my decision between these two. They are both different versions of great.

Got my answer today. The array 112 and the Magellan 112 go together beautifully. I tested them apart, together, and against the Magellan 212. The sound of the mix cabs against the Magellan 212 was a better clarity to the low end and it was the most even set up that I tried throughout the entire range of the instrument. Still kept that amazing low end as well. think I found a winner.

THIS

Well... I guess there are clear differences... a 12 is 2 inches bigger than a 10 and 3 inches smaller than a 15 and theoretically that would impact the footprint of the cab. Other than that, nothing is clear from just knowing the size. Think of it the next time you put some earbuds in. If low bass were a function of speaker size you wouldn't hear anything lower than... crickets. Phil Jones bass amps would have nothing below that high strung guitar... etc. etc.

There may of course be some truth to the common wisdom that 10 inch speakers are "more punchy" than 12's which are deeper because of other design parameters but the common wisdom tells you nothing about a specific speaker choice beyond what I observed above... As the OP said, this sales person doesn't seem very helpful or informed.

I did significant research before buying my Genzler gear. I had no opportunity to try any of my possible choices - in speakers a Barefaced super baby, audiokinesis hathor, greenboy, BA12-3 (the only array released at the time) - in heads the Mesa subway, quilter, darkglass, trickfish, Magellan 800 (the 350 wasn't announced yet). I bought the cab before even hearing one and the head after "hearing" most of the above at NAMM. The only GAS I have at this point is perhaps for the Genzler 350 head and an even smaller cab than the 12-3. All of the other options I considered are excellent choices, but the Genzler really does work and does everything I need/want plus more (I don't use the dirty channel or the contours). It just sounds great. Yesterday as I was playing with the church band I literally smiled because of how good my bass sounded. I got home and saw the OP's post and scratched my head. What in the world was that salesperson thinking? One may prefer any of the other good choices out there right now but to dis the Genzler gear is just ignorant.
