Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, eh? Being Canadian (wife is British) and living in California, we celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving, American Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Easter with turkey...any excuse is a good one .

I love turkey, stuffing with a few types of bread including chopped bagels and bacon in it, slow cooked all night. More bacon under the skin. We hope to cook one this Christmas.

It’s Indigenous People’s Day in some areas.

Also a Jewish holiday, Sukkot, October 13-20 this year. Our bakery is closed today and tomorrow.

As I mentioned a few days ago, went to see my son and the band he plays in do a gig at a venue I've played dozens of times over the years. It was a trip to say the least. Tried using an older camcorder to shoot some video. Did NOT turn out. All I got is this one crappy cell phone video of their song: "Lake Invaders: The Don Bachman Story". It's a song about a real problem in the Great Lakes....the invasive zebra mussel. (Invalid Link Removed)

Great Lakes and zebra mussels reminds me ... was the Genesee River ever cleaned up? One look at it "then" was not a great endorsement for the beer that took its name from that river. Genesee Cream Ale is a wonder. As in one wonders who drinks two Genesee Cream Ales ....

Ah, to be young and angry. Good punk era song. The phone did a good job, including the sound.

Musicians are spoiled these days. When I started playing, I was lucky to have a Fender Champ and a Fender Duo-Sonic. That's all we had... no pedals, no string choices, no nothing. I have to laugh.

Youth used to protest against the fuzz but bands embraced the fuzz.

My first pedal in the 60’s was a Vox Tone Bender. Pedal wise, you were pretty much limited to a fuzz, tremolo, and wah-wah as I recall. External effect units included reverb and frequency shifting vibrato.

The first effect was a DeArmond tremolo, developed in the 40’s. A mechanical device that sloshes liquid in a container to make and break
the instrument signal. That’s how Bo Diddley got his amazing effect.

The crimson and clover tremolo was achieved with an Ampeg Gemini II (G-15) amp. It used a photo sensitive bug which is still in use today in pedals and some studio outboard gear.

Yep. OTOH, Iron City has always seemed like such an eco friendly vibe...am I right?

The whole of my experience with Iron City beer occurs strictly inside Pittsburgh International Airport. Every concourse hosts multiple lemonade stands whose best interests are served (hic!) in representing Pittsburgh at its most hospitable.

Reminds me of "17 Watts", the book by British session bassist Mo Foster. He came up in the 60s, knew everybody before they became somebody. He talked about blowing the speaker out of his dad's radio because it was all they had for an amp. The title comes from a 17 watt combo someone got, every one was astonished and couldn't imagine having that much power.

And still no apparent shortage of bassists who will happily play a 20 watt tube amp today. But nobody today is going to buy a new computer with 12 MB of drive space

One theory I subscribe to is our "need" for major drive space started when programmers stopped writing software and started writing fatware. The who, what, when, where, and why of it is a bit like throwing darts at a lake.

I know, I’m in the minority when it comes to amp power. I like small wattage amps.

The 18W Marshall has always been a big favorite. Players and current builders love them. There are smaller amps like the Fender Vibo-Champ. Clapton had an artist Champ. My VC is 5W and people stand in line to use that amp. It sounds so good. For guitar I don’t ever need more than a 50W Marshall or a 30W Vox AC-30.

Twenty to thirty bass watts is enough to rattle a small room. All that you need for studio work. Big sellers at Ampeg are the PF-20T (20 watts) and the PF-50T (50 watts). The vintage SB-12 is 20 watts, the B-15 is 25W or 30W.
