Get off my LAWN! "Grumpy Old Farts"

Having spent a goodly number of years helping my erstwhile employer manage its golf courses I am quite well acquainted with the large flying vermin we call Canada Geese. They're beautiful. Their social structure and behavior is endlessly enchanting and complex. But they're the bane of golf course operators everywhere. Miserable winged pestilential creatures, they are.

And they're federally protected, and the authorities get extremely exercised when they learn of any harassment or abuse to them. There was a fairly famous incident in these parts some decades ago Link Removed . The case landed on the desk of a long-departed friend of mine who was with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. He said he poked at it for a while, shoving it from one side of the desk to the other, and finally charged the miscreant with killing a goose out of season and killing a goose with an illegal weapon. There were high-powered lawyers and the whole shebang: Link Removed .

This conversation regarding Canada Geese is getting out of hand. Some live in Canada in the summer months and some live in the southern US in the winter months. They have for centuries.

They do not recognize international boundaries. They never had to. They are, in fact, North American Geese.

Some migrate, some don't. Some think its better to stay in the south because flying back and forth is stupid. They are the smart ones.

So, in praise of the North American Geese, I say, if you don't want them around, don't plant grass. Don't build golf courses. Grass is their domain.

That being said, their poop is offensive but, so is ours ;). Have a great weekend!:laugh::laugh:

Swans are mean.

Geese can be as well...

They were migrating north and south before Canada and the USA existed. They were considered good eats.

They are also in Europe, New Zealand , and Finland. In some cases they were introduced to areas.

Cold callers. Specifically disability, schools, social security, solar panels, car warranties...

Anyone who starts with "My name is Joe and..." Clue - we know your name really isn't Joe for starters.

Anyone who doesn't know me and insists on using my first name or other over-familiarity.

All such people should have their genetalia hooked up to the output terminals of a 59 Plexi. When the recipient presses 4 on their phone...

Normally, I don't answer numbers IDK or come up unidentified, but if I do, I'll say "just a sec, lemme get a pencil". Then I go make a sammich or something.

I want one of those magic personal tape recorders that randomly spouts yes no maybe perhaps tell me more etc then gives my name as Ivor Bigun, 12345 Todger Street...
My father got a call from one of those meats and freezer outfits. He let the guy go through the whole pitch, then told him that wouldn't work out due to our dietary restrictions. The guy asked if we were vegetarians, my dad replied, "no, we're cannibals"....Click.

Mark of a GOF right there ^

A tactic that goes back to at least dial telephones. Not really sure how I ever lived through those times of taking a call without the slightest idea who is ringing.

Many a kid was broken into the system with cold door-to-door commission sales. Once it was cosmetics, and now it's solar panels.

Back in the 50's it was magazine sales for me. I think the neighbors hated to see me coming up their steps.

My dog had an uncanny way of recognizing door-to door salesmen and Jehovah's Witness. They never made it up the sidewalk. Other delivery people were fine. Except for the power meter reader.

In the old days before call display, it was ring twice, then hang up and call back. I never answer the phone now unless it's expected. I have enough people pestering me.

There aren't many good points about the virus but, door knockers are staying away.

Before retiring, I had an office phone, fax line, iPhone, internet service and home phone. I was getting hounded on all of them, the faxes were bad, such a waste of paper.

Now I just have an iPhone and internet service. My iPhone is always set on Do Not Disturb, except for contacts. Everything else goes to voice mail. I also set the phone for vibrate and block any numbers from spam sources.

The Do Not Call List is a joke and not worth spending time with. Being a GOF, I also went to on-line billing and statements. I religiously contact any junk mail senders to tell them to GTH. This has saved a lot of paper handling and recycling.

My life now has some peace and quiet and I have more time to find others things to grump about;).

I still prefer to all my bill paying via mail-or phone-and I get lotsa junk mail. It goes to the recycle bin after opening. If it has a prepaid return envelope, I put everything in it(without signing anything)and send it back. Found out recently that USPS no longer does Return To Sender w/o return postage. Too bad. I used to do it that way.
I trust that you'll have no problem finding other grump worthy subjects.

Once daily newspapers ran man-in-the-street features, like in The Onion but IRL. It always seemed to me it is an exercise to train green reporters how to engage strangers with a topical question. Similar skills are often cultivated in neighborhood watering holes. It may be no coincidence sharp reporters also hold their liquor.

Yep, you just gave me one @GonePlaid ! The post office gets paid by the sender to deliver junk mail. They should charge the sender for the return if it is not wanted by the recipient...makes sense but that is probably why it is not done.

I do like your prepaid return envelope policy...
