Reporters who know steno are way ahead of the game for accuracy
back when reporters wrote things down

Without steno training, a reporter's notes look like the Voynich manuscript.
Had to look that one up.

Back in the early '70s when my German was conversationally fluent, I got my hands on the diary of a relative on my mother's side that she wrote, starting once they were on the ship sailing from Bremerhaven in 1863. It was written using the old German handwriting script. I learned that easily enough, and was able to translate about 75% of it. I needed the help of an old German preacher (Lutheran, of course) to help me translate the remainder. It was basically a travel journal. They had to go through Montreal before disembarking at the area east of Buffalo where my ancestors settled from 1845-1865. The script looks like this:

Excellent penmanship!

Mrs. Dog and I now live by this. I learned back in the '80s when suddenly single and jogging with a friend. I kept getting a pain in one knee. The avid jogger friend said I needed some real good jogging shoes, so we went shopping. $50!!! For sneakers?!?! Well, I tried 'em and simply could not believe how much better they were!! :confused:o_O
.

Good shoes make a lot of difference.

The Brooks Addictions were about $130. Kinda had sticker shock but after wearing them, what an improvement over others. A doc had recommended them to us years ago.

Finns use a lotta vowels. Russians don't use enuff.
They also use a lot of consonants. In Finnish, a double vowel is pronounced longer than a single like vowel. Likewise, a double consonant is pronounced longer than a single like consonant.

A German example is "staat" vs. "stadt" (state/country vs. city). They sound the same, except that the "a" in "staat" is held longer than the "a" in "stadt".

I only mention this because I'm sure that @GonePlaid couldn't care less. :roflmao:

Not really. I find it interesting and confusing, but since I only speak one language(OK, I can cuss in a coupla others), it's not part of my daily life. That is, until NHL season. They have Russians, Finns, Swedes, Czechs, Germans, and who knows what else. Kinda fun listening to the PBP guys mispronounce names.

They used to manage the French names alright.

Doesn't anyone write a story where everything turns out right, and everyone is happy?
No reason to in today's world...
the moment when a challenge exceeds skill (and luck) is an unpredictable variable.
Sadly, a friend of mine did just that in some mntn bkng cmpttn he was in years ago.

R.I.P. Ross. He's the one to the right of Ms. Hooker

We were going to take my wife's first socsec check out there in 2020 to pursue an investment opportunity, then the global medical adventure happened. We had only gone once in the past 8 yrs.

We used to go once or twice a year a long time ago then got burned out on it. We are not high rollers by any means but we played enough to get rooms and meals comped, a limo ride from/to the airport, and tickets to shows in the hotel. Used to have a hotel rep that took care of us. Just called her up and said we'd like to be there on X dates and she took care of it. Customer care was outstanding. Really didn't have to gamble that much real cash. You're rated on play.

That was probably 15 yrs ago then all that gradually went away. It's almost all self service now. Stand in long lines to check in or use self service kiosks, poor service on the floor.

Anyways, we got used to that stuff and still had fun! :hyper:
Ah, Lost Wages. We used to go there every year for the Consumer Electronics Show throughout the '80s. The last time I was through there was on a camping trip to Death Valley in 1992 (my third time to that amazing place).

My second experience in Las Vegas is an audition for a bass job circa ~82. Been referred, show up and

and it's read a chart
and basic sight reading skills
and all what goes with
when two showgirls come off their shift. The first thing they do is measure their waistlines. And something inside of me says
I don't want to work here.

Zappa used to evaluate candidates with charts and sight reading. Good players were told to wait over there. Others were excused. This went on for hours at a time. Don’t know about waistlines but they did get invited to dinner.

Passing a Zappa audition goes down as a major life accomplishment in my book. Nested tuplets :wacky:
