Thank you all for your understanding of the impact this challenge is for me as a musician. I'm actually lucky to have a wife who will not tolerate wimping of any kind. She would be hard pressed to offer me a band aid if I was bleeding out on the floor. (Just kidding). She has the cred to be that way as she overcame a really tough growing up with the help of her equally tough dad. So I'm expected to be a stoic too. Not my best talent.
Anyhow I do get comfort in the fact that as musicians you all understand the terrifying aspects of the possible outcomes. In the past I have wondered which, for me, would be worse; loss of sight or hearing?
I do have faith that I will get better, but as a GOF I know that healing UP takes a lot longer at this age.

My biggest ear problem, is the head they're attached to.

Good morning GOF's. 50 degrees and slightly drizzly in sleepy Sitka, Alaska. The salmon have made their sojourns upstream for the fall so now it's time for God to wash out the streams. We get some tremendous rain that brings up the creek and stream levels to wash away the remaining salmon. Bears had their fill and are headed up the hills. Nice to take Shadow our pet through the park--the mornings are cool and crisp-- you can feel Fall in the air. My I'm getting poetic in my old age... LOL...

Good morning GOF's. 50 degrees and slightly drizzly in sleepy Sitka, Alaska.

I would opt to take a nap instead. I just got done cleaning up the whole internet at the foot of our bed. Last week I got rid of a computer cabinet that made that too difficult. This week, the mass of cables, mostly unused, power strips, a small AV surround system, etc. As we say here, I'm taaaaaaared (tired in redneck).

Hearing problems are a beast ...

(Oh yeah...grumble grumble I’m back after a brief hiatus)

My whole world changed when ears got so bad couldn’t operate as recording engineer anymore. I mean, would you trust a blind painter? It’s now so bad I wear hearing aids, even when I gig...

But...I can still and still do gig with alarming regularity. Whatever the issue, you can overcome it if need be. Here’s to hoping you don’t need to, but if you do, the step really isn’t as insurmountable as it seems.

Just got back from the ear/nose/throat doctor (family friend). Acute otitis media. Middle ear infection, acute. Not cute. I'm 100% deaf in my left ear above about 600 Hz. Below that is about -20db. My right ear is lost about 40%. I guess it's fairly rare in adults. He gave me strong antibiotic and steroids. If it doesn't work he will puncture my eardrum to drain it.

So I'm in the middle of recording and mixing down tracks for my latest tune for my buddy's little "record" company. I tried on the headphones today in my little home studio and got a glimpse into Brian Wilson's world. Holy crap!
My fingers are crossed and prayers said.

I used to get this problem and suffered for many years with visit after visit to ear nose and throat guys. Mine started after a couple years of free diving to 30' while living in the Bahamas. It turned out after many years of this I determined it was a migraine type reaction and a doctor put me on a single med plus I use some Chinese herbal medicine. Now I only have bouts with it on rare occasion. Good luck in recovery and perhaps think outside the box with a doctor who thinks outside the box.

It's been a horribly busy summer for me. Night mares at work caused by others outside my group. So I've mostly just been heckling in other threads, and drinking too much on Friday nights. Today I'm off to try and finish what I quoted 2 weeks minimum and got 4 working days to do. Stupid vendor took a month to ship a complex Cisco device that I could have got in two days from newegg, had the university let me. So, I've been grumpy. To cheer myself up last week, I snagged a Bag End S18B-C, set it in the living room and SWAMBO has not said a word about it!

Only got to mess around with it a couple of hours, but daaaaayaaamn, that sounds good. Compliments my 15" tweeter nicely.

I used to get the migraines all the time. Eventually the headache component went away or came on very light. I still get all the other funky stuff, lights, aura, and head feels like a big pumpkin. I can ignore it now without meds, or if I'm not too busy, I go home and lay down. It's still not very fun. Doesn't go on for days either, usually for the rest of the day that it comes on or shorter.

I got the Big Daddy for about half what it's worth. Sam Ash had a bad photo and the blue grill devalued it some I'm sure. I thought I would have to repaint that and the feet before unleashing on SWAMBO. Even the rat for looked washed out gray. It's still black and the grill is darker than the pic. Their photo:

Butt ugly. All I did was wash the splooge off the grill.

A while ago I had an “event". Not sure how to describe it but the upper left quadrant of my vision was just a colourless blur. I was confused and had difficulty speaking. My wife came home from her girlfriends, took one look at me and dialled 911. I was rushed to hospital where, eventually, a little fat lady doctor told me I had a migraine. I’d never had one in my life. I was sent home. Turned out it was actually a stroke for which I had received no treatment. I was not a happy camper. I heard the Paramedic tell her that I’d been drinking ‘cos he smelled booze on my wife’s breath. I hadn’t had a drink in a couple of years at that time! I couldn’t formulate a proper response to counter what he said. It took four months before a stroke was confirmed.

Blurry and or colorless vision, difficulty speaking, difficulty moving are all signs of a stroke. People sit in the waiting room for a day and all they do is give them aspirin or thinners. If they thought you were drinking, maybe they though that you were thinned out enough. Socialized medicine, universal health care or whatever they want to call it doesn't help I suppose.

The cat scan after #1 showed a little circle of damage. After #2 it showed a second smaller area next to the first. Looked a bit like a stylised pussy cat. After #3 there was a black area the size of Australia! That was a shock! Still I’m still here, mostly functional, I can still play very well, so I am told, and I can be as grumpy as is required.

That sucks Paul.
As I was reading this post and your description of the problem, I immediately first thought, he was having a stroke! Then when you said the ER doc told you "migraine" I thought no fun, but better than a stroke. Then you said you couldn't formulate a response to the accusation of drinking, and I'm like, even someone with a migraine ought to ge able to formulate such a response. But someone having a stroke, not so much.

I hope you have informed that doctor and that ER that they misdiagnosed a stroke. Gawd! They should at least go with that until confirming it isn't a stroke. Must have been the end of the doctor's shift and she just wanted to go home.

Sitting in front of a computer screen all day, not getting enough exercise for long hours at a time doesn't help in terms of eye strain, headaches, blood flow, posture, etc.

I force myself to go out everyday day at 6AM for an hour long walk, just to get the creative juices flowing. It does wonders.
