It's simply amazing that he lived as long as he did.

One of my mentors in the horse industry died from ALS about 25 years ago, she didn't make it to 60. Died about 4 years after diagnosis. Horrible.

Just being confined to a wheelchair is very life threatening. Many succumb to the pain and end up essentially hooked on legally prescribed narcotics. I know disabled vets who have a strong desire to work, be productive and self reliant, yet no one will hire them, their pain and other issues drives them to use the drugs they hate, and they end up barely able to care for themselves and get to the grocery store.

A friend and fellow Navy vet, a Viet Nam hero, blew his brains out a couple weeks ago. I cried on my good friend Al's shoulder a bit. I think he was tired of living with most of his hearing gone. I don't blame him. It's very, very sad.

And ALS, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, spinal bif and MS are all son's of bitches. I'd rather have cancer.

I give Sir Paul a hug, with optional reach around.

Stephen Hawking's voice became part of his persona.

In 1979, Radio Shack offered a voice synthesizer for the TRS-80 computer: The TRS‑80 Voice Synthesizer

I bought a Votrax SC-01-A chip soon after and wire wrapped a circuit board that plugged into the Apple II expansion bus. The technology was pretty amazing for 1980. It would speak whatever you typed. I wish that I still had it.

This is a demo of the RadioShack box.


Bell labs was working on synthized voice in the 1930’s and had a presentation at the 1939 world’s fair.

When I hear you EE guys say old school circuit modelling I envision you actually filling little canisters with smoke, placing a tight cover on them, and then positioning them just right between mirrors until you're ready to hook up a dry cell battery and see what happens at the output with Simpson 260. But hey, that's probably just me...well, and maybe all the other mechanical engineers in the world. :)
