Sometimes it felt like my eyelids were made of lead!

I got through graduate school working graveyard and attending classes just before work. Lead eyelids is a good description! The funny thing is that after I finished my MA, I discovered that I was too expensive to hire as a new teacher. But, things have worked out. Education in a lot of fields is no longer highly valued. But, if you can show up for work and do a good job, employers like that.

Stupid stuffin' heat wave is not all bad. First ripe fruit of the year from one of our trees, which looked completely dead two years ago after ~20 years of pretty good yields. But once again, nature did find a way. Fresh figs rule!

Mostly just eat them fresh, but we can only handle so many a day of course. We used to get hundreds off the one tree, so back then we did barter with a local store at a buck a pop trade value. If we get way too many this year we'll just dry them most likely. Plenty of farmer's markets here take consignments too, but the shelf life is super short and hitting the timing right would be a crapshoot. My wife does most of the ladder work, she has a new helper this year:

Yep, my wife is a Southern Belle and she knows sweet stuff for sure. Figs work really well in curry or chutney dishes too.

Outside our kitchen window several years ago we planted a Lilac tree. This year a bird has built a nest in it. It’s so much fun to watch the everyday antics of the mum. Sometimes she’s in the nest and at other times she stands on the edge and gazes into the nest as if in wonder. Both Dorothy and I are entranced. We take a look quite a few time a day.

The baby hummers are hilarious, especially when the wind gets rowdy, as it so often does here.

We have a nest box right outside our kitchen window for Violet-Green Swallows. The babies fledged a day or two ago, just in time to escape the heat. I took this pic a couple of days before that.

Heh...they're pretty self sufficient. Some years we've had major hassles with starlings and raccoons hitting them before they're even ripe, but I think there are still plenty of cherries in the neighbor's yard right now to keep them busy. Occasionally Scrub Jays have ruined a few as well, but they've mostly moved on to more challenging stuff like figuring out how to open my wife's thermal cup lid to get at her mocha. True story.

I left some uncooked beans in water too long and they sprouted so I spread them out over the backyard. Locals squirrels were seen having a few meals out there.

Too late-- already friends jack jack no take back! Sorry to inform you we're having BBQ sockeye tonight. It was fresh caught by one of my friends in the maintenance department. I keep his computers fine tuned!
