The bears try to stay out of sight and up river, and they still get plenty of salmon. Most of the bears get a pretty good feed out of one salmon. They actually eat them down to the spine, and leave heads and tails. The birds eat the sloppy leftovers and what falls into the stream goes out to the ocean where they are further consumed by other creatures. It seems that the salmon are food for every species. How are the bears in Sitka? I’ve seen them taking one bite out of a salmon belly then going after another one. That must be where the birds step in.
