Birds like anything with grease or oil. Like those suet/seed thingies. Years ago it was bread soaked in bacon fat. People in england get that with their full englishbreakfast. I’m lucky if I get bacon once a year.

My experience with Scrub Jays is they'll take anything edible and will come right up to you to take it-including peanuts in the shell.

The Blue Jays that I see are pretty big and thrive in the cold of winter. They seem to have a different head than a Scrub Jay. I’ve seen them cracking acorns which are pretty hard.

They greatly prefer unshelled since caching is their big thing. There's quite a bit of literature on stealing and stashing behaviors, and also their mapping mechanisms.

Your Blue Jays are a bit more similar to the Steller's Jays we see out here, who tend to hang out a little higher up the valleys and into the mountains. Border wars start just a few hundred feet from my house, actually.

We have Sharp Shin Hawks in my neck of the woods and they love my Homing pigeons for all the wrong reasons! :sour:

We're "discouraged" from feeding them since there are jerks who would try to harm them so I haven't done it for awhile. I had to be 'sneaky'.

I've read quite a bit about the Florida Scrub Jay population, which is considered endangered on some level. I don't hand feed, although I definitely could. Decided years ago that it's just not the best way to go. The Scrub Jays already follow me around and often hang out within a few feet anyhow, especially when I'm working in the garden. I stash peanuts in ridiculous places, they find them and move them to other ridiculous spots. Good times!

There was a large white bird that lived with the owner of a pet store in a nearby mall. It was always trying to garner attention from people that walked by. If people weren’t walking by, the bird would hang upside down and hauntingly scream like a women being attacked. All in a bid for someone to stop and chat.

You have to wonder about anyone teaching the bird to do that.
