I like the look of those SR instruments.

I never had a need for a low B string for what I play. Low B string notes can be covered with a keyboard. I have used plugins that genrate sub-harmonics to add low end power. This can be very effective. They often use this in films for theater effect with their fancy sound systems, same for danse music.

Someone I know wrote a song using his new five string bass, it walked up four notes on the low B. I thought that it was kind of gratuitous and didn’t add anything to the song.

Not to say that there isn’t a place for a fiver. I just prefer it to be in my pocket.

If I'd known about 'octavers', I prolly never woulda bought the Les Paul 5er back in 97. My EHX Micro POG is always in the gig bag if I think I'll need it.

The Micro POG has 3 level adjusting knobs. First one is the note being played, 2nd is 1 octave down, 3rd is 1 up. Mix and blend however. Also has 2 outputs: dry and effect. I only use effect(on/off with the button)but it would be pretty effective with 2 amps.[no, I don't work for EHX]

For good old-fashioned sedan-style trunk room it's the Crown Vic

There is a reason that car served law enforcement so well for so many years - I think my college dorm room had less usable space than the Crown Vics did.

And Crown Vics serve(d) well as limos. Big diff between the back of a LEO Crown Vic and a full stretch black Crown Vic. My personal familiarity extends only to the latter as my primary means to the aeropuerto every Monday morning. Every. Monday. Morning. For years. Two wrong turns don't make a right but three will get you back on the highway.

My government career along with living and working in the Washington DC area allowed me to see more than enough Crown Vics to last a lifetime.

I haven't found a need in the music I play for a five string bass and never tried one, so as usual I'm not going to be any help Will.

From all I have read and from folks I have spoken with I don't believe that a five string bass is necessarily an improvement on the standard bass guitar so much as it is a different (albeit similar) instrument. I know there are songs where the (signature) bass line was written for a five string, but those just don't show up in my work. FWIW, I too find that extra neck width very odd feeling.

Al, after some thought-- I've played many moons with 4 strings and still get hired when I put the word out. I agree and for myself I get by just fine with a 4 string. I can pretty accurately predict that once I get a five string bass in I'll be asking for an RMA within 24 hours!

I thought about this @beans-on-toast -- I had one odd request they couldn't fulfill. I called them and asked if they could cut down the sides to make a more shallow acoustic guitar and they said they contracted out for the kits and they were made in bulk-- in a word-- no. But I'd still be interested in trying one someday...

You-or someone you know-could prolly 'thin it down' but it might turn out the sound would also be 'thinned down'.

It's funny Will, I sort of talked myself into staying with the 4 string approach the same way. When I was sort of on the fence I watched a You Tube video by Scott Devine called something like "why you shouldn't play a 5 string". It actually started off with like 5 reasons why you should and then addressed 5 reasons why you might not need or want a 5 string.
