My view of February
Now over on the news production side of things we tend to see the world just slightly differently. There's one fellow out there I worked with whose wire service assigned him to live with the hippies for a year. The stories he filed became so sensitive they had to be hand-delivered to the main office, lest they be spiked before they reached the top desk. His deputy editor at that fine newspaper started his career at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago. As to a personal angle, I hold the dubious distinction of watching conflict unfold from my seat on the editor's rim (a horseshoe-shaped desk with a hole in the center where hard copy is dropped to the linotypers) in my role as a wire editor. Oh my. Different worlds.
Most of the smaller news outlets relied on wire services for their reports from Southeast Asia. And one tale concerns (I believe) a UPI reporter recalled from his post in Hong Kong after the Fall of Saigon. He wired the home office: "expect reimbursement for relocation of self, personal effects and junk". The bill UPI received included the cost of moving his junk, as in the one that sails on the water.
