Actually I lied. I don't do all 80's. I do a dinner set like Sinatra Buble and Bennett. Then a Carribbean type set, then some middle of the road "rock" like the Eagles and Fogarty, Rod Stewart, etc. And I've decided, yes, I'm going to stick with 12's, they got plenty loud last time I had a pair. Nice guitar by the way!

I'm going to re-do the guitar soon, I think. Normally my luthier buddy Marco Cortes won't supply pickups for anyone else's builds, but I'm pretty sure I can con him into doing a few for me.

It's funny because even if you buy high-end stuff, if it isn't recognizable, some people won't touch it. I have an expensive AKG condenser stage mic in my studio. I've had singers over who complained about it and brought their own SM 58s (which I also have). Hey, if it's good enough for James Taylor but not you, little local singer, no worries. I will break that stuff down faster than you can blink. You only get one shot at my best gear. If you can't tell the difference, you don't deserve it.

IME, even if they do recognize it many just want to stay in their comfort zone. I used to have a couple of SM-87s, which flat out kill SM-58s for many vocal applications in my world. Only a handful of people were even willing to try them though. I kept one for myself when I did the big PA purge. It's funny, they're mostly pimped as a female/Diva mic, and my voice mostly tends to the Beefheart side. But it works for me (live, I've never been into recording much at all), so...

Cool! Good 112 PA cabs are killer these days, I really like the QSC K series personally.

80s rock is obviously not my thing at all (with a few exceptions), but my guitar is certainly pointy enough to look the part...

Bass player's guitars are often heavy and have a wide neck. Maybe it makes them feel more comfortable.

Most of them were really only useable for basic PA needs, as in calling Bingo numbers.

I still get the willies when I step up to something and it's got an on/off switch on it, as that used to be the Big Red Flag for such things, so I do get it. But when someone tells me that the mic they're handing me is top of the line, I'm going to want to check that thing out before I dismiss it.

I'm wired to try new things and I often enjoy where they take me even if they are a bit junky. One of the coolest things about working with a really good luthier is being able to take out different basses to gigs and jams, with no pressure to buy them at all. Many of the end users have actually thanked me for doing so too, which is even cooler in some ways.

Scrub jays tend to be pretty friendly. Give them a few extra peanuts and they'll be OK with it.

One of the coolest things about working with a really good luthier is being able to take out different basses to gigs and jams, with no pressure to buy them at all. Many of the end users have actually thanked me for doing so too, which is even cooler in some ways.

Yep. I ran out of peanuts a couple of weeks ago and the ringleader has been stalking me pretty relentlessly ever since. The juveniles are just catching on to the possibility that I might be a food resource but they really have no idea how to leverage that just yet. They can barely handle a bug or a small berry like a goji, I think peanuts would make their little heads explode.

Yeah, exactly. Radio Shack made some decent PZM plate mics under license from Crown for quite a few years. They ran around 50 bucks and with some pretty simple mods they worked very well for a lot of things. Eventually they became collectable and I sold off my pair and bought used real Crown ones for not much more money. Go figure...

Our load-ins are as fast as possible, load-outs, even more so. I use AKG mics I get when GC-or someone-has them on sale. If one gets dropped, I'm out $48.-maybe. They seem pretty hardy and sound fine for live performances, so I'm sorta happy.

There are pearls everywhere, if you know where to look. Unfortunately most of the ones I was handed were not pearls, but I believe they exist. Nice that you were able to get those Crowns.

You never know what mic is going to sound best with a particular person. Intuitively, you’d think that a more expensive mic should sound better but it isn’t always the case. On some vocalists, a Shure SM57 sounds way better than an Neumann U47. Go figure.

I find that if you find a mic that works, carry it.
