I cheated and consulted Dr. Google on this one, but I remember using it:
DEVICE=C:\Windows\HIMEM.SYS
I remember using QEMM and DesqView in MS-DOS. Then ordering a Hauppauge 386 motherboard to upgrade my 286 computer, and using QEMM386 and DesqView 386 for very quick multitasking, even windowed, though, non-GUI, before Windows 3.11 started taking over the business world. XTreeGold was indispensable until 32-bit LFN took over. Then, and still today, ZTreeWin replaced XTreeGold! I still used QEMM386 and DesqView 386 under Windows NT, 2000 and XP and got 10 times the productivity out of my workstation. Then the Vista upgrade debacle got me to finally give up and except our IT base configuration at work. (sigh)
