Gosh, I'm such a lightweight as I was simply in alt.support.stop-smoking.

We had more fun there than anyone should. I moved to California on an invitation from a friend I met there and I'm still friends with several people I met in that group.

There was also a progressive rock USENET group that a lot of my bandmates were active in when I was in that weird fusion/prog thing but I never spent too much time there because, because, not sure why.

I wasn't playing the bass at all back then, so no bass group connections.

Heh. I still belong to a private group that spun off rec.music.makers.guitar over twenty years ago. There are still GTGs every few years. I missed the last one but managed to catch up with one Brit who came over for it and was passing trough my general area. RMMG could be a very contentious place, but it was big fun for a few years at least.

Um, okay nerd space. Justus (as in, Just Us) is a guild that survives to this day. My trial by fire was in the role of Justus guild captain. Raided the Black Temple* in The Burning Crusade as a warlock. A screenshot ... here in Stormwind on my time-lost protodrake just days before I step down as guild captain.

* Black Temple was endgame content and was the most challenging play available at the time.

For clean headroom in a tube format I basically need a Twin Reverb, or forget it.

Are Super Reverbs just too underpowered or is there too much inherent 'sweetness' in the basic sound? For strongly nostalgic reasons, I've always enjoyed the Super.

The 410 super reverb was a really nice amp. They came in 40W, 45W, and 70W, depending on the revision. The twin started off as a 25W tweed, then 40W, 45W, 85W, and 135W. A lot of design changes and variation in power output. My 135W was VERY loud. I wish that I didn't sell it: mint condition, 1977, for $500. What was I thinking!

I like the 85W blackface revision. They sell it as a reissue now.

SRs are fantastic amps, but yeah, both those things. I actually tend to prefer the Pro Reverb (2X12) at that power level, but even the various 60 watt tube amps I've built never could quite stay as clean as I sometimes want. My last guitar amp was a Fender 30, actually a 35 watt design, which I reworked to a Blackface Vibrolux Reverb (2x10) config. Really great sounding amp, but only a nine trick pony, and I need eleven. Other players' Twin Reverbs have been onstage with me so often over the years, usually the 135 watt versions. To me that's THE guitar sound, really. Dirty is trivially easy, and I'll always love that too. But really pristine clean is a tough nut IME. After my experience the other day I'm rethinking my approach. It wouldn't be the first time that everything I know is wrong.

I have a number of already built up 100 watt 4 X 6L6 power amp boards kicking around, a few 2 X 6L6 ones, and one 4 X EL84 one. If I can't manage something workable out of all that it's on me, for sure. Getting the packaging to my liking is the hard part, especially since I'm so determined not to go for an overtly vintage look. I already have that covered my danged self.

Thanks. The packaging is an interesting challenge as there is a lot of vintage and retro out there already.

ETA: The 'fine furniture' approach I've liked (within reason), but that is non-giggable, by-and-large. (Unless it's protected by the mighty Gardol Shield.)

I sometimes used it with a telecaster. The combination could peel paint off the walls with the high end.

It was a nice amp and had an ultralinear type output transformer. This made it clean at high volume levels. The earlier 85W didn’t have this type of transformer so was dirtier.

I've gigged with natural finish cabs quite a bit. Not always practical, but I'm not gigging at all these days and will probably have a very modest schedule if and when I get back to it. Especially on guitar.

Now that the Dean Girls are no longer the thing they once were, NAMM could use a blast of, well, something. I'll have my people get with some other people and see what they come up with, I guess.
