Gigging in Shorts?

I had a manager from Sony tell me I was to perform only in basketball shorts and flip-flips as he decided after seeing me wearing that at a show in NYC that this was to be my official look in the band....go figure....I was also on a hot as balls summer tour opening for OAR this past summer and EVERYONE was required to wear jeans every day on stage so it goes both ways I guess....and obviously shorts wouldn't suffice on a wedding gig!

when it comes to gigging with shorts, I generally don't but sometimes do - if I feel like it. I wear shorts to a gig about as much as I wear shorts in general - which is not often. Generally I dress up for a gig, but I haven't in the past little bit.

I guess that's a good sub question to the topic. How often do you normally where shorts? Meaning do you wear shorts 24/7 then slip on some slacks for gigs?

My 9-5 is business casual. The rest of the time, I am in Jeans, a T-shirt or camp shirt, and Chuck Taylors.

During the summer, I'll wear shorts if I am going to be out and about and it is hot.

This again?

This is becoming Band Management's version of Amp's "What does ohms mean?" thread topic.

Shorts? On stage? Are you kidding? Never. No way. Don't even think about it. Did it once- once- and have regretted it ever since.

Any time I see people on stage in shorts, my opinion of them is cut in half.

Except chicks of course. (Duh.) And drummers.

Only with a matching shirt, a contrasting tie, and sunglasses.

I thought he said gigging in shorts... not lack of shorts :D

For those of you who are saying "NO!!!" to shorts, what sort of music do you play? What sorts of gigs are you doing?

Like I said in my first post, I play in a rock trio. We do mostly originals with some covers of anything from Green Day to The Beatles to Foo Fighters. Our gigs are at bars or outdoor festivals. There isn't really a dress code in those sorts of venues. We're doing a TV spot in Fresno on Friday, and I probably won't wear shorts, but more because my legs are too white for the cameras to handle! Our only band uniform is.... Chuck Taylors...

I also play in my church band, and while there is no explicit dress code, if I showed up in shorts and a T-shirt, I'd get some funny looks for it.

I agree; type of music and type of gig is a huge factor. Like bassman, my 9-5 (it's actually more of a 2-10, but you get the idea) is business casual, but if I'm not at work, I'm always in shorts..year round. I can get away with it cuz I live in Texas, but still. Now, as far as gigging goes, if I'm playing rock music in a bar, I don't see why shorts are a definite 'no-no'. If I was playing a wedding or on a legitimate stage as an opening act, then maybe I would consider wearing pants. Consider. I have a life-long hatred for pants, so it's a lot for me to even wear pants to work 5 days a week. :bassist:
