GK Combo Shootout...MB210 vs. MB212

Last night I heard some 'scurrying around' like a mouse or something. Well, I've had good luck with treating rodent problems with PLENTY of low-end. (At my old house I found a closet with a bunch of wires and stuff that had mouse droppings. This was right around the time I joined TalkBass, so I started testing bass amps VERY loudly. No more mice.)

So I wheels out my MB212 and my Lakland 55-94 (preferable for its pre-amp). Volume CRANKed on the amp and lows cranked on the pre....long story short, it's been quiet today. (I found a nice F# on the 14th fret of the E string that would sustain f-o-r-e-v-e-r)

I DID hit the end of the headroom and the limiter kicked in. The whole house was literally vibrating in sympathy with every note resonating a different part of the house. :eek:

This may be a new business venture. ;)

I could have used those services last year in my garage. I wonder if it works for spiders too? I guess I'll have to crank up my MB210 and find out.

I tried it last Saturday at an outside practice and it didn't work right. I disconnected the 2x10 cabinet and the MB210 combo held it's own easy. Lots of power by itself.
I took the combo and cab to GC Sunday and a guy checked it out and it seems to be fine now. I had one of the 1/4" plugs going into a speakon adapter and the speaker cable/adapter connection caused some phasing problems. We hooked it up with a double speakon cable and it kicked in.
When I tried it at practice it sounded weak and the speakers sounded like they were crackling and popping. I actually had a bigger sound with just the MB210 by itself. A couple guys on here said it may be a phase problem. It works fine now but I'm not sure about the speakers until I play it in a better environment than my house. It shakes the windows along with everything else in here. I'm hoping, and pretty confident the phasing caused the "speaker problem". I'll know more after this weekend. I know when I add the 210MBE to the combo now it has some serious punch! Keeping my fingers crossed that everything is fine...I think it will be. I'll keep you informed.:bassist:

This definitely sounds like a phase problem. Anytime two are less than one, that's usually it.

Don't know about spiders, my guess is 'no'.

The mouse problem is going to be aided with some D-Con. We'll see how that works out. I hate killin' the little things but they are like the WORST roommate you've ever had!

I just wanted to add that I have been checking out these three combos for a while the mb212 in particular , My last stage rig was a gibson gb440 head with a dr bass 2x12 4 ohm cab and i loved it, I wasn't doing much gigging so I sold it and picked up a nemesis n15 combo , I recently got into a working casino band here in reno nv and for the ocasional outdoor gig was looking for something bigger..I picked a mb212 on special order from guitar center. Well when it arrived i was totally impressed with the weight and sound that this thing can produce , I messed around with it for a couple days just alone and it was great . So I had a low volume rehersal at my home in the garage , and for the first hour it sounded great then it started to develop this distortion if you weren't attacking the string , which just kept getting worse , I kinda lost it got P**sed and took it back to guitar center and picked up an acoustic b450 combo , anyway I took this thing home without even trying it , talk about dissapointment , I was really bummed...The b450 just sounded bad to me , couldn't handle the b string on my sterling hh at all. Well what do I do ?? i got online and sent an e-mail to support at gallien krueger, letting them know what happened with the mb212 , I didn't think I would even get a response , but in no more than 15 minutes i had one from Jason Finley .So I opted to give him a call and let him know what was up..He said they had a very limited incident with a couple of bad speakers , that were doing exactly what I had described, I was in a pinch because I only have this weekend off and am booked every weekend through next june . He pulled some strings and I should have my new mb212 by tuesday, I am talking only 2 days .. this is incredible customer service , I am sold on GK !!!!!!!!!!!!

GK customer support is really on their game. I have been impressed with the company since buying their products. I recently bought the MB212 and it has been great! Couldn't ask for more out of 37 pounds and one trip from the car to the club :) Yay.

I'm having a phasing issue with my MB210 and the 210MBE. GK saw the post on here and contacted. They're sending me packing and shipping information to send the combo back to them so they can resolve it...no charge to me to fix it or ship it. Real good customer service...:bassist:.

Been considering one of these for a while and just pulled the trigger at musiciansfriend. Those guys are getting a lot harder to haggle with, jeez! :) I'm a little NERVEous to be honest. I'm looking to downsize cuz I've been playing a lot of gigs (including acoustic ones). Sold my fender bassman 250 which was a MONSTER for volume, and I'm hoping, fingers crossed, that this thing can cut a small rock gig. From all the reviews I'm actually thinking not, but I'm open to adding the 15 somewhere down the line if necessary. Just thought I'd get into the mix here as this seems like the most active gk mb210 thread there is.

Considered the 2X12, but really don't like the sound of 12s, and I'm going for the biggest bang in the tiniest package possible. Will see in a few days what's what.

After reading this thread I decited to go with the MB210 only because I like the fact that I can add a extenion speaker and the tone is tight. I also like the weight. I hoping this will live up to my GB Neox 112t cabs which I'm replacing.

The less I have to carry the better off. By the way can the amp head come out easy if I wanted to use another amp? Be here next week, where can I get a cover for it?

I've had the 210 for a while, and I like it - punchy, tight, nice tone, loud enough for many situations. But after reconsidering my new set-up approach, and wanting to have a single combo that would be loud enough for an even larger variety of situations, w/o dragging along an extension cab, I decided to buy a 212.

I ordered it used, "very good condition" at a great price through Amazon. There's a good 45-day return policy, for if some reason it's a lemon I shouldn't be out more than the cost of return shipping (shipping to me was free). We'll see. I'll report back here.

still torn if i want the 210 or 212. my gut tells me to go for the 12's, the ext cab isnt a big deal as i would rather have a 2nd amp for running multiple channels.

Im big into Rush and Tool and stuff with that clunky badass bass. What would better suit those styles from playing a Geddy. Primarily i am 4string only and play Jazzes,Rics, and Musicmans.

I need a new amp for Sunday and want to order tonight and take advantage of GC 10% coupon. If anyone has any better coupon let me know ;P

thanks guys for your help. i read through this whole thread twice and am still contemplating. just needed alittle confirmation. Also those with Sansamps, do u guys just plug straight into the passive input? And there is no loop return to bypass the amp?

what to do, what to do... is it worth saving 100$ for a 'Like New' condition MB212? I bought my RPM 'Like New' and saved about 80$ on it and couldnt even notice it was used, except the fact i didnt get packaging. But amps and speakers are something different, i know how people can be when they dont own something and they try it out...

I would lose the Manufacturers Warranty, so i that would br what.. 2 years electronics, 1 year speakers? For a 45day no hassle return.... Which im not sure if i will have enough opportunities to really push one of these little beasts.

I just dont want to get stuck with one from the early production cycle where alot of people where complaining and having serious rattling issues or speaker problems.

Is the $100 worth the piece of mind?
