Good, cheap, loud SS head?

If you can find one; Genz Benz is getting close to your range. I'm not sure if a GBE 400 (SS only) would be loud enough for your needs; but it works for me. The GBE 600 (SS with tube pre-amp) would certainly be loud enough but it may be a little higher than $400 used. The two consistent things that folks say about G-B that is dead on is that they are well-built and their published power ratings are conservative.

I understand what you are saying. But I have an 800RB, and it sounds like @$$.

Possibly bad luck or a matter of opinion; I gigged and toured extensively with a 400RB for about 14 years, and it was 100 percent dependable, loud, sounded great pushing any cabinet I hooked it up to (that wasn't blown), and hid under the van seat like a sleepy little kitten.

Chiming in here with a question- a dude wants to trade my old Henry the 8x8 cab for a Peavey Tour 450. I need to lost the SWR because it's just too bulky and awkward for the weird logisitics in my house. My rough stone steps go UP to the basement, which has a pretty narrow door. It's a 200 year old stone house, and I have to live here!

I have smaller cabs and would like to turn this 8x8 into something useful. Is the Peavey worthy of the trade, do you reckon?

+1 on the used GK heads. They are hard to beat for the money and they really sound great.

Another great deal would be a used SWR 400S amp. I know that You said SS but the power section is SS and the single 12AX7 really warms up the sound. They can be had for $350-400. Bridged they put out 500 Watts.

You can probably find Peavey MAX/Firebass 450/700 heads for disgusting deals if you look around. They're going to go for less than GK.

+1 for the Firebass. Maybe your loudest SS for the buck, with tank-like reliability. The DDT makes sure no matter what your amp will not send damaging square waves to your cabs (no clipping.)

Can be had for $200 or so...
