Some folks go back and forth between pick and fingers? Why?

When I saw Naked City in concert I noticed bassist Fred Frith going back & forth between pick & fingers constantly...sometimes every two or three bars he'd switch.

I turned to my friend and asked "Do you think his chart specifies Pick vs. Fingers?"

My friend said "I think that's all his chart says!"

I use both depending on the tone I want. I'm going to experiment with thumbpicks as I have a couple songs where I switch and hate putting the pick in my mouth.
