Leo named that bass precision to play in tune more easily than playing the fretless. On the OP's list I see one guy who is known to play the fretless on recordings then morphed effortlessly into the P bass on recordings and became an icon. From the simplicity of "My Girl" to some of his more intricate basslines Jamerson played in time and with time (poly rhythmic), set up anticipation (oh, he's going to go there,,,but he hits you with a rest) and made his part so interesting that even before his name was widely known he was referred to as "that guy in Motown". I voted Jamerson. Holla

For sure. Jameson by all accounts is, but I bet Harris could play Jameson's lines but not the reverse.

As a pure instrumentalist I'd go Pino. Now if you want to factor other things like legacy, influence ect., I would go Jamerson.

A lot of folks can play Jamerson’s lines, but how many could have created them? Motown wouldn’t have sounded like Motown without him.

Yes it would, but with different bass players. James might have conceived the bass parts but Barry Gordy approved them.
