i have major g.a.s. for the pink pilot on ebay. i tried buying it off the guy who sold it to this guy on craigslist. i just missed it by a day. the guy on ebay has the listing all wrong stating it is a first production from 83, when in fact the 5 string did not come out till 86. cool thing too, is it is only two serial numbers away from my five string. wish me luck!!
Hello everyone. I'm left handed and I've been wanting a lefty Pilot for years. Well I found one for sale, but it's a bit of a mystery and I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on this since the seller doesn't seem to know much about it:
According to the guildguitar.com serial # dating info, it's about an '86 (BE1026XXX). First of all, did Guild ever offer a factory paint job like that, or does it look like someone refinished it? (If so, no doubt it was done in the 80's, LOL). Second, seller claims it has a factory installed Kahler bridge. Does this sound right for that period? (It looks like a righty bridge, as the tremolo bar hole is on top, but I suppose it's possible that Guild never did offer a true lefty Kahler bridge). And third, there's that noticeable 4th hole below the 3 knobs that looks like it's positioned where the fourth knob would normally go on a Pilot Advanced, but the Pilot Advanced wasn't until later in the decade, right? Seller has no idea what went in that hole. Still, is it possible that this was an Advanced Pilot (or body) at one time? Any help would be appreciated, as I'm trying to decide if I should pick it up or not.

your bass is an 87. your headstock came out half way through the 87 production. it is also a little tricky to read the sight buy the serial number you see on the guild site is the last number produced that year. last number made in 86 was BE101726 last number made in 87 was BE 102702.
your paint job is factory. when my uncle sold me my first pilot he gave me an ad with pilots on it that had the same paint job as yours just different colors(blue and black i think it was)
guild also did install kahlers on their basses from the factory. as far as it being lefty or righty i think kahler made them universal and just put two screw holes for the bar to go into on all of them.

Thanks for the info nalapit, that's exactly what I needed. The seller's asking $400, which isn't bad but I was hoping to find one in better shape with less mods (apparently there's a couple of extra peg holes routed too, perhaps a righty was flipping it over?). I do like this bass though, as it's probably a one of a kind for lefties and it does capture all that was good (and bad) about the 80's, LOL. A true time capsule. I think I'll go for it.

hmmm the trustrod nut is kinda stripped on mine... kinda sucks cause now it's stuck in a crappy position(to straight) so I have to take it in some where to get a new nut. Don't think it will me a big deal or set me back a whole lot, but still it kinda sucks since there aren't any luthiers nearby... but the up side is: I will probable end up with a better sized nut, this one is kinda crappy cause this size isn't widely used on instruments here, or on anything else for that matters...
Yeah that's why I wanted to adjust it in the first place, I've put on some flatwounds... but I ended up setting it to straight.

if you look back on my family pic i posted here. i think i gonna get rid of the black painted one and the black stained maple one. not 100 percent sure on the maple one yet though.

I got the reissue DeArmond 5 a few years back, mainly cos it was 35" scale, put Bartolini's in and a graphite nut. I like it.

how does a fretless pilot sound?

I have an old Pilot that was turned into a fretless long ago. IMO it sounds very good. I use flats on it.
