This exact thing has happened to me quite a few times over the past 1-2 yrs, but a recent experience thoroughly pissed me off to the point where I've greatly reduced my focus on GC...it's not worth wasting my time. (I have purchase a lot of guitars and basses basses from GC over the past 10 yrs, including quite a few fairly expensive ones - $2K+ used.)
My issue with this last experience wasn't that I didn't get the bass I wanted/purchased. It was about the runaround and complete waste of my time. I purchased a used American-made precision bass, completed the transaction online, called the store to verify. (They had charged my cc immediately.) The person I spoke with went and checked out the bass and transaction, then put the bass in back and said shipping was already on it. That was a Saturday. On Monday morning, I received an e-mail from GC informing me that they canceled my order. I immediately called the store and got a manager who told me that someone just put it on layaway locally, she didn't know what happened, and couldn't do anything about it. She said they would refund to my cc. After several calls over a week, they still hadn't refunded my cc. She had called the corporate office twice and they said they would take care of it. It took over 10 days to receive my credit. That's absolute nonsense.
I also agree with those here discussing GC's store vs online inventory database systems. I am involved with this type of technology as part of my career (for F500 retailers who have both online and stores) and it is a no-brainer to have systems linked up. Not a big deal and quite honestly not that expensive.
So, I have a choice as we all do... and GC isn't getting much of my attention any longer.
