Hi, guys!! I need your bass wiseness, please!!

A guy from my area is selling this bass and i was wondering if it's original, because I'd like to trade it for another bass I have....

He told me it's a Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass, but they changed the decal to a Fender one, they added a "custom Shop" decal on the back....but...I see it has an "american" serial number in it...I can't seem to find any details or info about it....

I don't know if it's an American Neck in a Squier body or is it something like a Highway One Precision or something like that....or just some decals...any help, please?!?!

Thanks a lot guys!!

What an odd post. Usually these "is this real of fake" posts involve a buyer who thinks the seller might be trying to pass off a cheap copy as a more expensive model. Here, the seller is being upfront about it being a cheap bass that has been made to look like (maybe not so successfully) an American Fender and the buyer thinks he is not being honest and that it might be a real Fender. Huh??

I think mojomike is right, though. That neck heel looks way too square for it to be a Squier. I have a old Japanese P copy (70's or 80s?) that has a neck like that but this looks new. Perhaps the seller is trying to pass off a super cheap bass as a much more expensive Squier. That would be a new twist on the traditional scam! What's next, fake SXs?

It seems to be a nice looking bass. If you like the way it sounds and plays and if the price reflects its pedigree, why not buy it?

Nice looking bass. The body wood looks like alder at least, and the decal tries to at least look like an early 70s P-bass decal, but the élan of the lettering is flat, instead of skewered forward like it is with the original. The headstock's curves are a little too soft to even be a Squier.

Definitely a fake. Those tuners come straight from either a Squier VM, or a Fender MiM (which are really the same thing, and are either Korean or Taiwanese).

If I were you, and you really wanted this bass, I wouldn't offer more than 250 for this bass, shipped. I'd also ask for a video demo (to make sure it works, at least) , even if the person selling this isn't a player. It looks like it could play, and frankly, there seems to be at least some decent components on there.

He told me it's a Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass, but they changed...

I have a feeling it isn’t even that.

Being “honest” about being shady doesn’t inspire comfort imo.

I’d just pass on it. A new or used one that’s totally right is so inexpensive I wouldn’t bother taking a chance with this guy.

That bass was not made by FMIC or their subsidiaries. Do not buy it and make an ad on CL alerting everybody about this scam artist.

I am thinking I should keep a running list of all the "is this a counterfeit Fender" threads and just post the list every time somebody post their homemade counterfeit...
