Hey, look at that! I'm a spoiled brat!

Having said that... I wish i had your guys problems. :)

Oh and since i am broke this month... Tuna in a can + mayo + generic brand of wonder bread = $10 for roughly 10 days of food. Welcome to the real world.

I turned 18 not too long ago. I haven't had a job for a while, but I've been looking for the last three months. It's especially hard to find a job here, because most of the economy is fueled by a fort that provides about 90% of the town's population.

I still live with my mom, and lately she decided that I'm just not trying to find a job. So what does she do? She stopped having food in the house, and only gives me food once a day. I have no option but to accept this, because I have no money at all.

So, two days ago I ate at about 7 o'clock. Yesterday, my mom got off of work at 7:30. Eating only one meal a day means I'm used to it, but by nine I couldn't stand not having eaten for over 26 hours. I called her, and asked her when she would be home. Her reply? "You need to stop bothering me, this is my time." I asked again if she knew when she'd be home, and she hung up. When she got home she told me I need to stop acting like a spoiled brat.

I always thought spoiled kids had everything they needed and wouldn't accept not having things that they wanted and didn't need. I'm pretty sure I need food, but am I wrong about this? How long should I wait for food because I'm apparently not trying to find a job?

This can be resolved in two easy steps:
1.) Shut Up
2.)Get a job
you're lucky your mom didn't give you the boot.

OH I read them buster know it all, here is the abridged version as I saw it: I cant get a job(EXCUSE, too many people already wanting those jobs(EXCUSE), I have a condition(excuse) but I want to be a PRO WELDER, EVEN though I cant do anything with exertion(excuse), I live near a military base (excuse), and so and so has all of those jobs(excuse) and the other places I cant work there(excuse), oh and I bought my mom a hod dog stand with My hard earned money, and it didn't work out because she would not work it enough, and I cant(excuse).Did I miss anything there MR. POPPIN?

YOU SEE I speak from experience here, I have a 181/2 year old step son, pulling the same stunt. He thinks he can lay around and listen to IPOD/ watch T.V and eat/drink milk and soda all day. Because he applied for a job, but nobody hired him ... So now I should support him for the rest of his life, listening to one excuse after another... B.S.

Well he's only been out of work for 6 months or whatever, that's all I meant, not two years.

Calm down big boy, take a nap.

I figured I was off base. I recall a program on how Saudi Arabia is becoming a little more progressive in their treatment of women, and that there is a lot of misconception. I recall specifically the fact that once women are in their home...the abayas come off and they look like any western woman. Jeans...blouse...etc. There was actually conversation that women are more empowered in Saudi culture because they aren't objectified as they are in the west. The misconceptions that we have are perpetrated by the media and ignorance...I'm all too happy to have my presumptions proven wrong.

It is enlightening to see that while things may on the surface seem way different between cultures...we are all quite similar,...just factionalized.

On Topic.

I think that generally here in the states...we are taught that if we want to live the "American Dream" then we have to apply ourselves. This isn't limited to the age of 18. In order to attend a "good college" (whatever that means) we have to excel in our primary education...(grade school, middle school, high school). We go from the time we are 5; sometimes earlier, until we are 18. This isn't the case; but it almost felt like it was a federal law. We can drop out but very few people will hire dropouts...and I don't blame them. School is the easiest time in your life...no bills, no job, no kids,...if you can't make it through ten years of that then how dedicated are you going to be when your job turns stressful for a minute or two. I have no problem with applying myself, and that is what most parents that give their kids tough love (are you reading this OP?) are trying to get them to do...apply themselves.

Once you graduate...you go to college. For me the problem with college is that in order to attend,...barring scholarships and grants...one has to take on a serious amount of debt. Some consider it an investment in one's self. I see it as a trap to be put on the merry-go-round that is our countries' financial system. You are only worth how much you are in debt, whether it be mortgages, car loans or student loans.

I tried to attend Communtiy College and got to go for free thanks to grants. They are easy to get; once you turn a certain age "they" stop taking into account your parents income. Unfortunately it is hard to apply yourself when you have to work 2 jobs to support yourself and keep up on your studies. Something had to give and it was school. MAybe these are just excuses...if they are someone point that out to me.

I would love to go back...and if I'm not able to find a job...I may go. If I do now that I'm married I may be eligible for more money. Maybe I can take care of my wife and I and still be able to focus on my studies.

So if for whatever reason you cannot go to college, you have two other options. Join the workforce (retail, manual labor, trade)...or become a burden. I joined the workforce. Becoming a burden is stigmatized and there is a fine line on whether or not it is TB appropriate...so I won't go there.

The biggest difference I see is the part where you go to college. Most of you guys stop being dependant on your parents and take a job or find other ways to support yourself.

Here,as long as a kid's having education parrents mostly support them.

One of the things where the difference comes from is the job opportunities I believe. We have 16% unemployement right now.Crisis ****ed things up but it was a common problem in Turkey for years. No one's giving a job to a 18 year old kid who goes to college.Thats why we have to be supported. There are alternative ways of course, again I'm speaking generally.

Its the same about people who don't go to college. You either be a part of the working force or a burden.

We're all apes. From a biological point of view.

Not only from a biological point of wiew, you'd be surprised if I pulled my ears a bit forward.:p

But I ps'ed what I meant with "apes" in the post before.:)

Two anecdotes:

1) I was unemployed for about 4 months last year and I had a 15 year old daughter at home to support, and that means rent, utilities, food, transportation, etc. . I spent about 25 hours a week pounding pavement actively looking for work at every factory, gas station, restaurant, store, and whatever else might be hiring in the hopes of making a steady paycheck. I usually walked or rode my bike because I couldn't afford the gas money for my car. I spent another 35 or so hours every week walking around my neighborhood asking residents if I could mow their lawn, paint their house, haul garbage or do some other job for cash. The odd jobs I did earned me enough money to keep my lights on and keep me and my daughter from getting evicted but it meant my daughter had a lot of Ramen noodles and peanut butter sandwiches to eat for several months and I usually did with less.

In the end I decided to simply move to another town 30 miles away where I had a sure job lined up and I begged the owner of the company for an advance to pay the deposit on my apartment.

2) I've been visiting my grandmother in the nursing home for the past few weeks since she went in (she's 87) and I recently asked her about the great depression and how it compares to the current economic recession. She said we're all a bunch of wusses if we think this is hardship. She and my grandfather used to shoot squirrels and pigeons several times a week and cook them in stew because meat from the store was beyond their means. Watered down stew was what they ate for most meals. Sometimes they had beans for a change of pace. A few times a week they would treat themselves to a snack of a slice of bread with a dab of honey on it. They both worked whatever jobs they could find no matter how unpleasant and since most jobs paid so little they often had to work 70 or 80 hours a week to make enough to pay the few bills they had.

When we get to that point, then I'll think that we're suffering.

No, Dont Join the Army!

Geez thats bad advice. You'll likely hate it and may get killed. But then again maybe you wont?

Personally, I dont agree with your mother not feeding you. The least she could do is just provide you with plain macaroni (and I mean plain, no sauce no butter etc) for the other meals besides dinner. After a while you'll get very sick of eating macaroni for breakfast lunch (and snack?) 7 days a week, but at least you wont go hungry. No mother should let her child go hungry in my opinion.

Eating plain macaroni ALL THE TIME will have the same effect she is trying to accomplish, but you wont starve.

One thing you could try is asking neighbours if you could mow their lawn for $5. Telemarketer COs are always looking to hire. If you have a larger city near you, take the bus out there. There should be more opportunities there. Even if its an hour bus trip each way, a job is a job.

Craigslist has tons of employment listings.

You are 18 and have to wait until mommy comes home so you can eat? That's pathetic. You are not a kid anymore, take some responsibility, get off your butt, learn to make a sandwich for yourself and stop whining about it.

When you grow up you'll have real problems to deal with not the imagined injustice of mommy not caring for her little boy anymore.

The first thing I did when I got laid off was get started on going back to school, within 2 weeks I had already enrolled into a school. Since you have jack for cash, the financial aid reps will work with you, trust me. I'm sure if you at least did that your mom would maybe give you a loaf of bread. But I will admit the job market sucks. I've been applying for jobs since I got laid off (especially since I HAVE to in order to get unemployment) and I haven't heard a thing. And I've been applying for jobs I'm qualified for and over-qualified for.
