Hey, look at that! I'm a spoiled brat!

I see a re-occuring theme of excuses why you can't do things. When you get desperate enough, you'll figure it out. If you were helping make neds meet in the house when you were working before, how can you expect that things will continue the same when you're not bringing in any income. I'm sure you mom is feeling her own desperation about the situation, too. You're 18, which means you're an adult. If you were living with any other adult besides family, you'd be expected to pay rent and buy your own food. If it comes down to eating or not, I'd do ANYTHING I HAD to to put food on the table.

Why shouldn't it?

In this era of equality, the same should be held true for both women and men.

I was talking to machine gewehr.

ERR maybe shouldn't have brought it up; but lets say for argument sake.

I bring it up because the perception that I have (rightly or wrongly) is that girls are at a disadvantage to boys in middle eastern culture. Girls are considered property, or a burden. That may also be outdated way of thinking. It tends to be the portrayal in mass media however.

That said I'm all for being called out on not having my facts straight and being told that my perceptions are misconceived. As I said I'm totally ignorant to Turkish culture and am okay to be re-adjusted in my presumptions. Perhaps Turkey isn't even considered the Middle East...more Mediterranean???

You mentioned some kind of inability in your physical well being that keeps you from joining the army?
Well grab DISABILITY checks! Unless you don't have those in whatever non-US country you hail from
Because it's not disabling, I'd just be useless on a battlefield. The thing about the military is no matter what you are needed for now, you may be needed to fight. If you can't fight you'll have a hard time getting in.

Have you even tried to enlist? Sounds like more excuses to me. Go to your base or local recruiters office. They'll tell you if you'd be useless on a battlefield (there are lots of non-combat support jobs in the armed forces, too).

Military is not a bad option right now. We're working on backing out of both war zones, they feed, house and pay you for 4 years guaranteed, you've got limited education and work experience, and you still have the option of playing bass in the army band.

What are you waiting for?

You'd be surprised. There are scores of technical jobs in the armed forces that they will train you for if you score high enough on the ASVAB and a few other tests. The Navy especially is highly technical. Look into it and talk to a recruiter before you fully discredit that idea.

What are the differences?

Not to be ignorant but does the same hold true for both men and women?

I know nothing about Turkish culture.

I think in your culture when a boy(girl too?) is 18 they're most likely expected to leave home,or some similar things like "manning up" "getting a job" etc.,am I right ?Correct me if I'm wrong please.

But here,if a family is capable of taking care of their kids, they keep them under their roof for a longer time. For example my 2 cousins were living with their family (using the home like a hotel most likely though but still...) till they got merried.

We can take me as an example. Most of my life I was like a wandering bullet.I still am like that sometimes.I had depression, sleeping and alcohol problems all my life.I'm like a damaged good.

People who know me tell me that if they were my parents they'd kick me out years ago, half joking.
I'm 24,I've been in college for 6 years and its pretty messed up,I dare to call the situation FUBAR.My brother's been following my footsteps all his life. But my family still has the power (barely) to take care both of us,they work really hard for that and still keep us with them.
They saved my life,if I was kicked out when I was 18 I'd be probably dead by now.

I don't know if you have traditions like this for example:All the people I know whom got married were supported by their families as much as they could, pushed to the limits(financially&other ways).

How is it there, would you support your kids as much as our culture does or tell them to man up and get out of home when they're 18 like in this thread?

Man this is going to help my Culture and Comminication class.:p

Ok, you are obviously short on cash and need some. Eating one meal a day is horrible. I'll explain to you how to make some money quick.

Your 18, so you probably like to drink and party. Start to get to know the college kids around you, make some friends. Then, host a party. Get like 2 kegs. Charge people $5 at the door to get a bottomless cup. (Refillable) Kegs range in price from like $30-$80. Get some decent quality beer. Then get some of your close friends to help you run the party. You will be making a lot of money if you have like 200 kids at your party. If the party is a success, have one or two a week. Now your talking 1-2 grand a week. This is some good money, for a kid who lives in his mom's house and has one meal a day.

If you follow this plan, you will become popular, have fun, make friends, and most importantly for you, MAKE MONEY!!!

I wish you the best of luck and hope you follow this plan. Tell me what happens at your first party.

The way I see it, the basic idea here is that we all have the right to be happy but the duty to be productive. Once you're a citizen you're supposed to give to society, not take from it. But, until you're 18 you're not really a citizen, you're the property of your parents. It's their respnsibility to make you into a productive citizen. Once you're 18 you are now responsible for being a productive member of society.

Ah sorry about that. :p

After reading machine's post, I can also +1 it.
Growing up in an Indian family, I can tell you that parents expect their children to stay with them as long as possible :rollno:. My sister who is 23, still lives here, has her university paid off ( i believe) and does not even think about leaving our house. I, on the other hand will be different. As soon as i get a well paying job, i will be leaving.

In these families, there are no discussions of whether or not you are "moving out". For women its more like, "I'm getting married, bye". For the males in the family, the parents usually live with one of their sons. When the son gets married, the wife moves in, to help the family. Heck, marriages on that part of the world are often accords set up between families who happen to have something in common.

I am SUPER glad I'm in Canada, I would NOT be able to stand that.

Also, A LOT of that is changing now a days due to immigration. Families assimilate to new accustoms and often lose their "roots". Some "native's", though rarely, might pick up on one of their immigrated neighbour's way, and do things similarly.

Plus they will pay for school afterwards.

It's what I was going to do, but my hearing kept me out.

Most kids finish high school around 18 and then figure it is time for them to leave the nest.

Is that really the case though these days? I would assume with economy now that it would have changed especially.

Back home all my mates are around 21-22 and unless they have a partner, most are still living at home.

Here in Calgary, my friends are all pretty much 23 and there's only two that have their own place and that's because they're in a relationship and can afford to do it together.

I remember reading a lot of news articles back home about people not moving out till 23-25, especially if they're going through Uni.

Dunno about the rest of the country, but most of my friends either went to school, or joined the military once they were done with high school. Some stayed behind and went to a community college and worked for a bit, but in the end they left as well.

Actually, That "18" standard is not the case anymore. Most people want to settle later in life now, closer to 26+. It's been like that starting in the late '90's.

That said, I'm giving myself the limit of 22. I need to learn independence.
