History Channel - Vikings

Hirst has said several times this is a drama, not a documentary. I'm fine with that being the case, I just think he's picking the wrong things to make historically accurate. :)

I'm sad about Floki. No real closure on his character. Sort of like how they offed Rollo, not dead, but not really part of the show anymore.
I get it though, there's no room for him anymore. Time to focus on the hip next generation. I don't like it, but I get it.

I gave up on historical accuracy in this show a long time ago. Right after I started watching, I learned (read somewhere) that Ragnar might have been real, might have been a fable, might have been "an amalgam" of people, etc, as though history isn't too sure.

Seems there is a historical mention somewhere of a Viking named Ragnar leading an attack on Paris in the 860's. According to Anglo-Saxon chronicles The Great Heathen Army arrived in England around 865.

Interesting dynamic though since Halfdan is going to join Bjorn.
Perhaps a big Bjorn/Halfdan and Harald showdown in Kattegat.
The seer did predict one of Ragnar's sons will kill Lagertha. You may be on to something @TUEP.

Just checked out a armorer who makes high end functional swords based off historical finds...these are $900-$1200 dollar swords, and most of their Viking collection is sold out! People getting down with the ice and snow, were the midnight sun and the hot springs blow. LOL!!

I know a Swedish dude who carries a real Viking sword around on his motorbike
he had some strange sheath made for it so it slides up the body of the bike, just under the seat
AFAIK, he's never had to use it, but it is there if he needs to
yes, it's a HOG
His bike is in Thailand, so no problems getting pulled over for carrying that around, it's like the Wild Wild West, LOL

No Ragnar, no Rollo, no Floki, no Helga, no Ecbert, no Aelle, soon to be no Lagertha.
Ubbe and Hvitserk are boring and their love triangle is lame.
Bjorn is alright, but whatever.
The new bishop Heahmund? Pass. I'm not watching this show for the Saxons.
Now you have crazy Ivar who is willing to kill anyone anytime? Pass. We didn't see him kill a Saxon in battle, yet we see him lose his temper and kill his half brother? Please.

I'll surely tune in for the start of season five, but there are no compelling characters or story lines for me anymore.

Ivar threw one hatchet during the battle, and that's all we saw. I guess the show makers couldn't figure out how to film the chariot during battle.

I kind of hated the whole scene with Ragnar's sons at the big table on a stage in front of everyone. Even if they are the sons of Ragnar, the world's most interesting man at the time, I imagine Harald and Halfdan wanting to sit there also.

Harald's look of puzzlement when his bro stated his intention of sailing with Bjorn- he really is the weaker of the two. Too bad.

Apparently the Hirsch version of Ivar is only good at killing defenseless people. The little boy he axed in the head as a child and now Sigurd enjoying a victory meal.
The season five preview shows Ivar with blood all over his face, getting knocked out of his chariot, and screaming though.

I'm a little late here, and you've all made some great points guys.

You’re right – that wasn’t much of a battle. I’m bummed for Floki – he was one of the few that didn’t seem to have a wandering eye like the rest of his fellow Vikings, and he really loved Helga. It was interesting that he buried her with jewelry and weapons which was how Viking burial was explained in an episode of “Real Vikings”.

Bjorn wants to explore, Ivar want’s conquest, and the others want to live in the new settlement, but little did they know – that Bjorn signed a bogus contract. That sure was a tragedy the way Sigurd was killed, and by his brother. My take away.

I've been reading a bit on the actual history, and found some of the Viking storylines to be (sometimes) way off. Hirst did say the show was made of ideas turned into storylines, but surely the show's creator should have done a bit better with accuracy.
It seems that Ivar was a man of "exceptional cruelty and ferocity" ruling over parts of Denmark and Sweden, and appointed Ecbert as a "puppet king" to Northumbria.
Halfdan was Ivars brother.

Actually Ivar may or may not of had a brother named Halfdan. Halfdan the Black was actually married to Sigurd's grand daughter, and was the father of Harald Finehair.
