History Channel - Vikings

Yes - what were they thinking - didn't Hirst know that Vikings fans want to see Viking battles!? I was all ready for a bloody massacre, and poof - next scene ... lame. I wanted to see Ivar hacking up people from his chariot, and would have liked to have seen Aelle being hacked up from Bjorn's point of view as well.

I like when after Aethelwulf expressed his humiliation to Dad with what he put him through (with regards to Judith and his "bastard son"); told Aethelwulf the only reason he used him so badly was because he trusts him completely thus showing his confidence in him to fight the Great Army.

There better be a battle next week!

OMG! That Blood Eagle scene with Allea. Gawd...can you just imagine being alive while someone hacks away at your exposed spinal cord???? Is suppose shock would set in. I wonder what ever will they do to Eckbert?? Appears as though they are poised to win this battle. Surprise for Ivar, his idea was very much like something his father would have done. I still can’t stand him but he was right on that one. Very smart strategy. Now, maybe they will all come together to defeat those brothers!

Oh And...can someone explain to me where King Harald and his brother are? They are fighting in England right? Why was that woman there? Her husband was fighting with Bjorn’s army and he brought his wife with him?? I don’t understand this practice at all. Going to battle so bring your wife? Although I guess the camp is safe because the battle is fought else where. I don’t know, but you see King Harlad and his brother in a different camp than everyone else right? Then the do appear in the battle scene but I suppose it is a big camp. I have a feeling Lagertha and Bjorn are going to have a secret plot to get rid of him. They might let him start another attempt to over throw Kattegat but now they know what he is up to. Lagertha will play dumb, bide her time, and hopefully we will see another Ragnar Style take down of the bad guy!

And can I just say...LAGERTHA HAS STILL GOT IT!!! That was an awesome scene with her standing there, calm and confident with the torch. She is a badass and I LOVE those Shield Maidens!! I really hope Torvi is not dead, wait until Bjorn finds out why she died. He may be into Astrid right now, but Torvi is the mother of his children. Some one will have to pay for it if she dies.

Well then. This is reminding of the old days with Vikings. Good stuff.
Did anyone think for one second that Ellisif wasn't hiding a knife in her clothes? That scene, to me at least, was obvious from the get go. I just wasn't sure how he'd survive. Harald seemed unsure at first too, but thankfully his brother knew better. That was a funny one liner Halfdan dropped as he wiped the blood from his sword and returned it to it's sheath.

Very cool how Bjorn listened to Ivar. I don't remember Ragnar doing that often. One of the times he did, the results were bad.

Lagertha raising her arms from her side in the showdown with Egil....anyone else remember Ragnar doing that? She's a copycat.

I'm starting to come around on Aethelwulf. I never liked him before, but I am beginning to.
Oh dang though when Alfred stood up and said he wanted to fight. I still think something is going to go down between him and Floki.

I really like what is coming of Floki. This crap with Helga and the child they kidnapped is boring me to tears. Let the girl run away.

Is Torvi dead?

I made the huge mistake of watching a 3-4 minute leak of next weeks episode. For anyone else tempted to do so.....DON'T!

-Mike

Of coarse she had a knife, and why wasn't Finehair wise to it? Blinded by lust, and we've seen this movie before.

Ivar has turned out to be quite the war strategist - probably beyond his own expectations, and now a hero in the Viking world and to his brothers. Now he's respected and he knows it. Cheers for Ivar!

Did you see the dirty look the little girl gave Floki when he returned her to Helga(?) I guess the truth is she's not all that scared of Floki - it's Helga she really hates.

When Torvi was laying there - it looked like the arrow nailed her in the armpit area - I’m not convinced that she's been killed … yet.

I sure got my Viking battle that was so sorely missed from last week!!!

I think it was during one of his speeches to his brothers, about them needing to stick together, it was around the time when they were heading to the Middle East through France. Well now, Lagertha knows they are plotting to over throw her, so when they get back, something is going to go down. I think she will secretly tell Bjorn, and we will see Harald stopped in his tracks during his next plot to take Kattegat. Although when they get back and find out his pal was cooked alive they may cut and run who knows.

Yeah that was a strange scene with Bjorn and Astrid. What the heck? Hitting on your mom’s girl friend??? And what about Torvi, is she dead??? Her eyes were blinking at that point, but it didn’t appear as though any one found her n time to save her. That sucks, I do love what she has become!

Pass me the barbeque sauce! :D Now Lagertha has the dirt on Harald, and probably will tell Bjorn (being he's grown to be such a cautious & wise man not to mention her only son born of Ragnar Lothbrok), however they may keep it to themselves for now.

I don't think Torvi is dead with where she was hit with the arrow, but who knows. I didn't think a crippled man with 100s of pounds of iron strapped to his legs could swim to shore after a shipwreck or how a man could die from non-poisonous snakes that were thrown into a pit that was so cold - it would have rendered the snakes inactive, so she may be in fact dead. In any case - I'm not sure how much Bjorn will miss her much the way he was looking at her from behind in despise while eyeballing Astrid (during the sacrifice), but he will have to avenge her death. Like father - like son with the women.

YES INDEED SHE STILL HAS IT - I SO LOVE lAGERTHA IN FIGHT SCENES!

One of the episodes of "Real Vikings" explored if there were any real Shield Maidens (partially hosted by Winnick & Sutherland), and they discovered the skeletal remains of a woman found in the Viking fortified town of Birka - buried in a longboat with sword, knives, axes, a shield, and arrows. Being buried in a longboat pointing towards the sea was a top honor for the top tier.

When Kattegat is attacked, how do they tell who plays for what team? They all look alike to me.

Torvi was killed, as she's a daughter of the producer, sister of the gal who plays Helga
When Torvi was laying there - it looked like the arrow nailed her in the armpit area - I’m not convinced that she's been killed … yet.

I'm not convinced she's dead either. She blinked, but maybe that didn't mean anything.

Some other observations

-During the attack on Kattegat, Lagertha looks though flames and sees the bastard guy. I wonder if that inspired the BBQ?
-Harald is a pud. Thank goodness his brother is around to take care of him. HE should be the king.
-When they're running through the woods, at one point the footage is sped up to the point of hilariousness, like Keystone Cops sped up. They manipulate footage like that all the time, but there is a few seconds where its just plain funny watching Ivar's limo and Floki running.

I love that show.

First of all the Total War player in me was wondering why the attackers on Kattekat didn't use siege weapons. There was no hurry to take it...could have closed off the port, and besieged the town for a couple weeks, and then work over the defenses from afar.

The battle in England was a bit hard to watch. You think the English Prince would have been more cautious about just charging around the field. I know it is 300 years before the Welsh (English) Longbow comes into play, but I found it strange how the English had no archers.

I agree.
Sure, Aethelwulf is inexperienced himself, but they made him and the English soldiers look like clowns. I thought the English army was well regarded in that era.

Spoiler! This post is going to be biased. But this show just totally eliminated Sigurd's legacy from their script. He would go on to rule quite a bit of land in Denmark, he would marry Aelle's daughter, and he would lead military expeditions into Francia. Never to Bjorn and Ivar he was probably one of the most powerful brothers. Possibly more powerful than either Bjorn or Ivar in Scandinavia.

What the heck? They're killing all the wrong people.
I lost all sense of what Hirst is trying to create here with his loose and random adherence to known history while other times veering way away from it.

The opening battle scene was way too short, and no shots of Ivar or Floki really fighting. Lame.

Letting Aethelwulf and his men get away??? Bad, bad idea that is going to haunt them.

I had a sneaking feeling Ecbert would have the last laugh.

I hope I don't sound like a broken record here. But in reality Bjorn's quests in the Mediterranean, were somewhat hit and miss and he failed at the end. Sigurd had a better recorded career as a ruler and military leader...but this show seems to favor Bjorn. Later none of the sons really lead "The Great Heathen Army" even Ivar bails on it by the time Alfred beats them. Also them dragging a young Islamic girl through several episodes made no sense. Then the love triangles in Kattegat became almost predicable. I mean don't get me wrong I know you have to have a story line but some of the sex/romance stuff seemed more forced than naturally written in. Hirst sacrificed good history for a brother rivalry that didn't exist.

I agree with you @TUEP. I feel like the writing has stepped down a notch as the show progresses.
It's much more predictable now, but that may also be my biased angle since I've watched every episode since day one, and watch them each multiple times.
However, I do go back and watch season one and two for context and it feels different to me.

I'm still not buying until Ivar. It seems forced or faked where Ragnar did a much better job making his character believable. If he is the future of the show, count me out.

so now both Hirst sisters are gone, EGADS!
I stopped trying to see the true history relevance when I found out Ragnar & Rollo didn't even exist in the same timeframe

I'm not buying Torvi being dead until next season, as I saw her blink, then never buried/burnt.

I gave up on historical accuracy in this show a long time ago. Right after I started watching, I learned (read somewhere) that Ragnar might have been real, might have been a fable, might have been "an amalgam" of people, etc, as though history isn't too sure.

As more characters were introduced, it got weirder and went against history even more. Some say Halfdan was Ivar's brother. Some wiki entries don't mention Bjorn as one of Ragnar's sons.

I think Hirst used the characters and embellished them in a way to make a TV show. I believe this show is the longest lasting of any he has written/produced, so maybe he's running into continuity issues and also having problems with being able to reconcile his vision of what he wants the show to do with actual "known" history. He probably should've offed Ubbe, as he is the most boring Ragnarson, but he's way hunkier than Sigurd.:smug:

I miss Siggy.

The guy at the end-Anany (Aranya?) Zapata- I Googled that and there are several Fecebook profiles with that name and I instantly lost interest.
