Sweet jesus that's gorgeous, if I could have only one finish on anything, it would be that.
Speaking of that, I gotta get back to work on my sunburst car with tort windows.
I'm also getting a tort and sunburst tattoo over my entire body.
Tort and sunburst: it's not just a finish, it's a way of life.

I've never liked Fiesta "red" much (it's pink IMO, but not a cool pink) but I know some love it so I hope I don't offend saying that. I also don't like gold or that Sahara Taupe (yikes!) but as some have said, it can depend once you start swapping PGs and other stuff to make it unique and overall something different. It also depends on the instrument (as was also pointed out) and I do agree that some colours I don't like on say a bass really work on some model of guitar and so on.

Variety is the spice of life, and thank goodness we aren't all playing the same colour instruments. Boring!

I was just reading about the colour last night (Fender - The Golden Age - 1946-1970) It was a CBS marketing decision stemming from on the Coronado guitars binding. While using a heat-gun to soften & bend the binding material, the wood was scorched in places adjacent to the binding. Probably because they were somewhat inexperienced and/or rushing to crank them out. Fender hadn't done binding much until the later 60's when CBS took over. 'Grayburst' as they called it originally was devised to cover up the burn marks. A pic in that book of a Coronado II guitar (page 234) shows an 'aged' Antiqua model that looks awesome - the rich almost tobacco/pale green colours on that example really work for me. I've not seen one that looks exactly like that - especially the recent re-issue which reflected the late 70's version which is more silver-grey.

Huh, I thought smokers teeth were the original inspiration for antigua...

Personally I really like matte and satin finishes. But the other poster is right that a lot of inexpensive instruments have been finished this way, particularly acoustic guitars, so I guess that's why there's a connotation. I think done right, a matte or satin finish can make an instrument look much nicer than the standard gloss. [edit: I type bad]

The Gibson Faded and the Fender satin honey burst look really cheap to me. Like paint your own guitar class or something. The exception is F-Bass which does this really well.

Skimping on the complimentary burst color is no way to polish a turd.

Honeyburst is usually dead sexy (especially with a black pickguard and rosewood board) but this one looks like it's been done with a rattle can by an amateur.

Plus, one-ply pickguards are the hallmark of a cheap bass.

Honeyburst would be more orange than red on the outside. This looks more like a Cherryburst to me.

Some stock colors I would not buy, but I can't think of any that I absolutely detest.

It's "custom" paint jobs that usually make me want to puke. Example:

My pick -

Any Daisy Rock Bass Guitar. It reminds me of cotton candy.

Although I wonder how this one would sound with upgraded pickups and a set of flats?

Hey now! I have a couple of Daisy Rocks. A Blue Flower and a Red Heart. I'd get a Butterfly if one ever came up that was reasonably priced. They're not bad basses, cheap electronics and pickups.
