Hot! Hot! Hot!

I seriously do not know how I survived hot, humid summers as a kid with no central air and no A/C unit in my bedroom. We had one large window unit in our living room and my parents had a small one in their bedroom.

These days, I wake up in the middle of the night swelteringly hot if the ambient temperature is above 70* F. I have no idea how I made it through any hot night when I was a kid, or how I managed to even get to sleep in that. Amazing how things have changed.

My room didn't have its own A/C either. And half of my first 8 or 10 cars were 60s muscle cars which didn't have A/C. I won't get in a car without A/C anymore.

When I first moved to California, I drove here in a 1991 Subaru Legacy, which was an awesome car. I averaged 35 mph in that car coming across the country. But it was already old by then, and a few weeks after I started my new job, the A/C gave out. There was no way I was going to be able to drive to and from work without it.

It was going to cost $1000 to get it fixed. That was about what the car was worth, so it was totaled. I ended up trading it for a newer Legacy, which I HATED. Should have spent the money and fixed the A/C.

I never owned anything with air conditioning, including a car, until I bought a 2002 Chevy van that had it. I will happily admit that my current van has air conditioning and I have been enjoying that fact very much for the last few days. My wife, who is adamantly anti-air conditioning, actually turned it on in her car Sunday and yesterday. I don't recall that every happening before. She mostly flopped out in the house yesterday, with a couple excursions to different places with the air conditioning on in her car. She will be back to normal today.

Growing up in relative poverty made me appreciate being able to have nice things, and I've never held back on comforts as long as I was able to afford them. My parents may have come up through the Great Depression, but I did not need to carry their baggage forward.

I can relate. I never thought of myself as poor growing up, but we finally got an indoor bathroom when I was six-years old. I've ended up in a much better place than I ever expected and have met and worked with all kinds of people along the way. There'e no shame to living in poverty, but there's no moral high ground either.

Update: 121.1F or 49.5C. Unimaginable.

For anyone wondering, Lytton is about half hour north of Hells Gate.

NJ was hot all week 97 yesterday but it was 100 and over on Monday and Tuesday Newark hit a new record high on Tuesday with a temperature of 102 degrees
