Actually, a Subaru Forester just like you. I don't like the height of the back deck but aside from that it's just great.
The BEST vehicle for transporting a lot of gear with minimal effort is a Honda Element. Wish they still made those. My guitar player's got one and that thing is just fantastic to load and unload. Back end is maybe 14" off the ground. You don't have to lift anything, just tip it in.
I do envy the Europeans on this thread (and those I've met there) who just use club backline and have working public transit systems that get you to places you would want to go in a reasonable amount of time. One thing we just don't have in the states (SF and parts of NY have working transit, but not much in the way of decent club backline)
And, yea... hand trucks & transit are a thing in the EU and NYC.
