How many gigs did you play this year?

Lets see... If I do the math right, Cary the 10, divide by pie, subtract unpaid gigs - I come in at a nice round zero.
Yes, zero. Can't seem to be in a group that doesn't implode about 2 weeks from being gig ready. Strangely, I think I've improved my playing quite a bit due to constantly learning new songs, etc. (plus my 10-99 is a breeze to fill out)

Some of the responses to this bring up a question - What constitutes a "gig"?
Maybe it's because I'm an amateur - but to me a "gig" is playing in public in front of an audience, not a rehearsal (even paid).
My response of 36 was all paid public performances.

We did 134 shows this year 20 less than last year but last year we weren't off Jan, Feb and March We decide not to book anything till after March but we ended up booking 2 at the end of March and this year we tried to stay away from week day gigs as much as we could and we still had quite a few Thursdays. Our schedule is already getting booked for next year we are into March 2015

I counted 12 but the average of one a month doesn't mean anything because we had many months with nothing and some months were very busy. The guys I play with traditionally got most of the jobs but have been very slack this year so I have stepped up and got us some, including a regular monthly gig. We are much better and happier when we keep gigging.

For the past 5-6 years of my bands 10 year existence, we've played 190-210 shows a year. We're all happy with this so we wouldn't really consider doing any more than that (and definitely not less than 190).

I'm over 100 per year for the last 6 years. Pretty much every Friday and Saturday with a handful of Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays thrown in.

I do 2-4 gigs a month, I think this year it worked out to just about 35 shows.
Our bandleader has another trio that has a weekly gig, and then does solo acoustic shows the rest of the week. he is a full time musician, the drummer and I both have careers outside music and play when we can.

I think I did six this year. My band does a lot of original music, so we spend a lot of time recording. As far as gigs, they fall into three categories for us:

1. Shows here in town within 2-3 miles from where we live. These are always places that we like to hang out, where we know everyone and where all our friends like to go. We also limit ourselves to them being outdoors and obviously in the summer months. So basically every bar/restaurant in town that we like to go to that also has outdoor patio seating, we play there at least once during the summer.

2. Milwaukee shows at hip places. These are small shows, but usually in bars/clubs where they are specifically into our kind of music. Typically it involves one or more other groups playing. We'll do maybe one of these during the winter.

3. Big shows, usually in Minneapolis. We have booking connections there and once or twice a year we'll get a call asking us if we'd like to open for Howard Jones or A Flock of Seagulls or whoever. Most of these end up falling through, but sometimes they don't. This year nothing came to fruition.

Add that all up and you're looking at maybe six gigs.

I do see your point. But to me, if I'm getting paid, getting a 1099, and have to pay taxes on the income, I count it as work. Work=gig. I had a total of 9 paid rehearsals this year between a Disney engagement and a musical.

But to be consistant using that mindset, I could say that I will have played 99 gigs (instead od 98) this year because we are getting paid extra to soundcheck on the night before our NYE gig at Disney. We have to load in after the park closes on the 30th. It's a little inconvenient but we're all backlined.

Would like more, but band chooses to play twice a month. Would like to get over 30....maybe a side job...who knows what 2015 might pull in.

10 a year at the church (unpaid, once a month excluding two months during the summer), and our proper band only just got a new enthusiastic singer, so only about a half dozen benefits before that.
We had one hour long slot that was paid.
Things should pick up next year, we've got two bookings already and haven't even played a full night out yet!
