How to stop Tinnitus

Caffeine will turn it up in the morning if you have coffee. Don't know about the evening.

I read about that lately. But I always have what I call my "two cup kick start" in the morning. Doesn't seem to make it any worse but maybe its prolonging the ringing. Don't know. But if I want coffee throughout the day I always have decaf which I know still contains some caffeine.

I've also read lately that tinnitus may have nothing to do with your ears but it could be an inflammation within your brain. Certain nerve cells are inflamed which is causing the ringing within your ears. Oh, lovely. Got more reading to do on this one.

Heard this on our demented auntie's radio show, health report, earlier. Readers may find it interesting — the causes of tinnitus and what can be done.

They're talking also of ketamine — 'Comes on just like Special K'? :wacky: — now, potentially, playing a part in the curative-cocktail shakeup. Paging Doctor Feelgood :)

This is the first mainstream report of heard of using psychedelics in tinnitus research. I know in my state, I can get ketamine assisted psychotherapy, and psilocybin and other psychedelic plants have been decriminalized in 4 cities. this makes me even more hopeful that my experiences might lead to lasting relief.

Just curious. Have there been any controlled studies re: mushrooms as tinnitus treatment?

Searched online and couldn't find anything except anecdotal 'evidence'.
Not to my knowledge. And considering the severity of the things it is being studied for, it'll probably be a long time before tinnitus studies garner any funding.

I'm thinking when they say it doesn't continue forever, they are referring to the short-term tinnitus that occurs after a loud concert, etc. It always went away for me too until I got it bad from long-term antibiotics. That's not going away, probably forever. I think the tinnitus we're all talking about is the type that doesn't just go away.

Tinnitus stops?! Lol. If you are like me, it doesn't. Mine is permanent, and it's loud. It's louder than conversations or anything else I hear. It's 24/7. And, NOTHING I've ever tried has helped in even the smallest amount.

I live with it, accept that it's not going away, and ignore it as much as possible.

That reminds me why I have a good deal of skepticism about this kind of thing. There is quite a history of people trying to use hallucinogens therapeutically, and the results in most cases are pretty underwhelming, if not plain negative. I suppose the fact they have such a clear effect makes them ripe for scams, as people know they are doing something, so it seems they would be likely to report an improvement.

This is resonating with me. This particular nature, brought to our attention here, is intriguing me, no end — all the richer for this awareness as it fits,

Stress is detrimental to survival. It's potentially an overcompensation, very likely in many cases — hysteria etc. playing a part — which can be addressed, considering the evidence. And so, on these grounds, placebo, further complicating things, will very likely be playing a role — calming the racket, quelling the unquiet mind, in any number of ways. Thinking (feeling) works.

Being a sufferer, I have some of this, empirically, now as awareness. We've known for some time that our thinking plays a significant role. Being at peace with the ringing is, in some ways a mind trick — POOF! It disappears, just like that. Very rewarding, if you can get your head around it.

The same principle applies where white noise is concerned. The mind's getting amongst it: white noise, once it's familiar to the auditory cortex, disappears because the mind has better, more important things to do and can dispense with it easily :)

These awarenesses, gained decades ago, gave me almost immediate relief. Since then, science has been continuing successfully on this tack. It's not easy, for a number of reasons, to stop focusing on the ringing. It is, however, eminently possible, at least in my case, and by no means am I alone. Protecting what remains of your hearing, addressing the din in the real world, is the other side of the coin. That too will aid you profoundly, in this same, sane sense.​

That theory makes perfect sense, but just a caution that it appears there are several theories that all make sense. I do believe we are getting closer to understanding the nature of the problem, but still have quite a way to go.

Tinnitus generators are theoretically located in the auditory pathway, and such generators and various mechanisms occurring in the peripheral auditory system have been explained in terms of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions, edge theory, and discordant theory."

I don't think anyone disputes that the ultimate cause is damage to the inner ear though, so you can't just think it away. And the idea it involves your brain compensating for missing information doesn't mean thinking differently can affect it.
 
I agree to some extent, but I am allergic to any idea that because something is brain-related it is "all in your head". Which includes the positive version of the idea that it is only as real as we think it is. It's hard for me to succinctly get the idea across, but you can't just decide it's not a problem, and it goes away. Like you said, most strategies take a lot of effort, and they aren't really fixing anything. When I worked with people who had serious brain-injuries, magical thinking was rampant and counter-productive.

You're reading too much into it. I'm not committing to any fix. This is beyond the scope of my post, determinedly. I'm not playing with words — it's not all in my head, or anyone else's ;) — and I believe I've made myself reasonably clear, in my way. I'm not here to argue. Do you see the link between white noise and the ringing? It requires some good sense and some leniency.

It's not concrete, but my thinking is relatively firm because these stated positions seem to indicate a unifying nature of the noggin. Evidence suggests that diminishing white noise, at least, is a matter of the power of the mind. Evidently, we can make it go away without removing the source.

People I'm looking to, over decades now, are now, perhaps, considering tinnitus in a similar fashion. Not the same but reflecting the same potentials. The results, in my mind, in both instances, speak for themselves, supporting the argument :) It's just a hypothesis.

I've also read where MDMA can have some beneficial effect
 
I have had ringing in my ears since my 20s the thing I notice is when my blood pressure goes up it gets louder anyone else experience this? I take a blood pressure med to control it but when it goes down I can barely hear the ringing.

For me it is systemic inflammation that makes it louder.
