I bought it in 04. I was just excited to finally buy a fender jazz after looking at em for a few years in a catalog. I don't think there was anything on the shelf other than that black and maybe wine red.

Blocks are the single greatest thing I've ever seen. And that is a glorious display. I'm just not a burst or black fan
Yup, get a refin and stop agonizing over it.
Yeah, someone had to say it! Burst without Tort? No wonder your stomach turns every time you pass by it!

I recommend a refin, but because the placebo effect is at play here, the tonal result really does depend on your belief.
If you can't convince yourself that the tone will remain the same or improve, don't do it. Even if recorded examples are identical, you will hear a difference and your bass will be "ruined".
But I will point to many players , like Mick Ronson in the Ziggy days, who stripped the black finish off his LP to "open up the sound".

The midnight wine was always a winner in my opinion. I wish they'd bring it back.

Loved the feel and sound of my red jazz bass, hated the color.

I'd recommend you try and think about whether you'd ever ever re-sell, because it'll cut a good bit of the market value. Hard to imagine getting rid of #1 for sure, but just something to keep in mind since there's always cool new (and new-old) stuff coming up for sale.
I'll also add that as someone who's refinished a bass before, it's surprising fun to go through the process of picking out a color, sending in samples of what you're looking for, and seeing the progress unfold. I feel so much more invested in the finished product too

Funny, I'm in a very similar boat.
I still think she's pretty, so I don't cringe when I see mine or anything, but it isn't quite "me". I LOVE THIS P-BASS otherwise in every other possible way (it is heavily modded too)... so... pretty sure the body may be going to Marty Bell for a refinish after I sell the basses I currently have in the classifieds. I was thinking a Sparkle Green or maybe a Candy Green or something.
I obviously don't belong here. I like that bass. Classic looking jazz to me, especially dig the maple and blocks! I hated the wine red era and I think sparkles belong on ski boats. I'd honestly put the chrome bridge cover on and a tort pickguard and feel like a classic badass when i played it... much like this man pictured here. Hes playing the P version of course, but if sunburst looked good to jamerson, it looks good to me.

I’ve been procrastinating on a refin but should just do it already..... maybe in charcoal grey with a white pickgaurd?

I’m not sure if I’d have the same reaction. Maybe if you sent it over to my house it would take one stressor off your hands, and I can report back if I have a similar reaction. One thing for sure, it would keep your from being grossed out...
