People love drama, Jerry. We seem to revel in watching anyone who's "made it" fall off of the same pedestal. I have no idea what that's about other than maybe sour grapes or jealousy.
Scott LaFaro is an apt player to compare to Jaco Pastorius, as both appeared as revolutionary players. Like Pastorius, LaFaro inspired a number of players who came after him (Gary Peacock, Eddie Gomez, Steve Gilmore, etc.), and he still inspires controversy (played too many notes, didn't groove, etc.).
Not taking sides, just pointing out the obvious. Tone is very subjective. Remember that John Paul Jones also plugged a Jazz into an Acoustic 360. I wouldn't call his tone farty or nasaly. It's just a matter of how the artist sets the knobs, technique...blah blah..etc...
Yeah, taking sides. Aren't we so tribal?
This thread started out as a question posted by a player who was simply asking for pointers to Jaco performances which might positively change his perspective on Jaco. There were, in fact, a few interesting posts along those lines; and then, the thread rapidly digressed into Hatfields vs McCoys. I suppose that's just human nature.
I completely agree with one of Brad's earlier posts that no one has to either appreciate or respect any artist, irrespective of any argument to the contrary. I'm good with that. All for it.
However, one thing that hopefully remains a baseline for TB discussions is to not start hurling insults at participating TB'ers who may have different views than yourself. That was the part of this thread I found to be disappointing, quite aside from any derails or disagreements, or even the topic at hand
. There has been just too much of what has historically been unacceptable. Name calling and disrespectful insults hurled at TB'ers in this thread. No class. I hope that development and the fact that Mods let it go on does not portend changes in TB culture. I can't get with that. At all.

That's funny, OP, because nobody has ever recorded a track with more groove than "Barbary Coast"
This post became confusing/emotionally charged rather early. Someone else is adding the 'f-jaco' tag. I remove all tags when I check this thread.
As an update to the 'groove' aspect of this thread, I have listened to the songs posted, and yes, there are some tracks that hes kills it in the groove department. Consider me now better educated. Thank you to those who actually read what I was asking instead of jumping to conclusions.
I would say Jeff owes much of his sound and approach to Jaco....

Jeff & Jaco came out at the exact time, Jeff in no way owes any of his sound or approach to Jaco. Jeff is his own beast, who has a complete style of his own & ways of phrasing.

I grew up as a little skate punk kid in the mid 80's so generally music with an abrasive bent tickles me. It is difficult for me to describe as I find Mingus to be abrasive at times. Let me think on it awhile?
You know, I really find a lot of different things exciting from Mingus to Motown. I find it difficult to narrow down. I think I'm more interested on a song by song basis than I am in any single style or player.
I think a lot depends on what kind of music you enjoy the most. I'm mostly a rock/metal guy and only occasionaly enjoy listening to jazz. I like Jaco a lot but that for me I think is because he has a lot of R&B influence in his playing. In contrast I don't enjoy listening to John Pattatucci, he's obviously an amazing player who deserves lots of respect but I'm going to always reach for a Cream or Sabbath album before I do one of his. In the end for me I have to enjoy the music, great bass playing in music I don't care for does nothing for me.
See, this is interesting to me. I grew up on Motown and Beatles and Carpenters and Wings and Chicago and Simon and Garfunkel, then moved on to punk like DK's, Black Flag, Necros, Gangrene, Flipper, Sonic Youth, DRI, Circle Jerks etc then moved on to Jazz and Fusion music- Miles, Trane, Bird, Mingus, Clifford Brown, Dizzy and big band stuff from Glenn Miller, Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, then Headhunters, Digital Dolphins, Pat Metheney, Weather Report, Jaco, Return To Forever, Yellowjackets, Spyro Gyra etc........I still love all of it, even the nasty old punk stuff. I think the DK's were brilliant. I feel that way about Jaco and his music. I find it frankly strange that we can share some musical taste but not all. Sounds simple enough but if you think about it, it isn't. Like food- my ex girlfriend and I like almost all of the same foods, with the notable exception of goat cheese. She thinks it's manna from heaven and I think it's best used to torture prisoners in order to extract information. Weird.
These are mostly board tapes that better represent Jaco's tone over the crappy youtube videos out there, some force of nature playing on here. IMHO
A very similar musical journey as (sort of old timer) me. Quite a few others as well I would bet.
I thought you had forgotten Jello's band but you hadn't. I'm guessing there is a lot of in between stuff you didn't mention. Nice to enjoy a wide range eh? (no offense to anyone mind you)

Yup, it just furthers my point that Jeff is his own player & never tried be Jaco.
