Took my daughter to her music lesson today and there was an Ibanez BTB 845 on the rack on consignment. What an incredible instrument. I almost had to buy it on principal. Almost half off the price of a new one. I can't even play the one bass I have worth a crap yet so I definitely have not earned or deserve it. Something to aspire to and motivate me though!

If you honestly think it is a bass you will play it, maybe you should get it if it is a good deal you can afford.
You know you want the bass man. Snap it up
Your daughter wants you to get it. Ask her. It's the right move.
Such minor details have never stopped me, nor I would think, many others here.
If it's a really good deal, buy it and learn to play into it. Let it be the inspiration to take you to the next level, assuming of course you have the pesos spare.
And we all know you're posting about it here to get us to help you justify it in your own mind.

I had a BTB... 745 I believe, and if I hadn't gotten an injury on my right hand making the string spacing and scale a bit of an issue, I never would've sold it.
As someone else has said, you can always learn into it, and they sound good (unlike what people like to claim mostly because it's an Ibanez). Really full, but still articulate.
Biggest downside is size / weight, but if you can deal you've got one heck of a bass.
As a mother of 4, I'm in the grow into camp rather than grow out of.
Last week, I was in the same situation . Never owned or played Fretless bass before.I always considered myself not good enough to go there. Always told myself , "I don't play Fretless " One became available close by that was same model as my fretted bass. Only this one is limited edition and this company no longer builds Fretless . I'd ordered one and cancelled at the last minute because I didn't think I should spend that much on my first Fretless . I was offered a great deal on another one from my local mom and pop. Still too much for what I thought I deserved. So I passed.
On this one however, the price was $1k off new but mint condition . I would have been a fool not to get it.
I'm having such fun growing into my new bass!!

This right here. If it makes you pick it up and play more, then you need this bass.
Here's what ya do,....
Go in the music store every other day and play the thing. Do this so often and so much that (the bass is so funked up that it smells like you) they practically give you the bass, just to get you the heck out of the store.

Same. I mean I owned one. Sold it because i didn't play it. Bought a Warmoth fretless neck for my Squierp, broke the nut trying to remove it for sanding. Sat around forever waiting for me to fix it. Then one day. Bam. My new favorite instrument. I'm not sure I'd call it "switching to bass" because I've got 35 years of guitar and about 2 months of bass but... Yeah I'm switching to bass. It's unbelievably fun.
Seeing you have been a member of TB for less than two months, it's possible you haven't discovered this is the worst place you could possibly come to request assistance in resisting the purchase of a bass guitar. The advice you will get on this topic from those of us on TB will generally be unanimous and will always be in favor of getting the bass.
If you provide uncomfortable detail about being in dire financial condition, we all become financial advisors on how to manage the purchase.
If you tell us your significant other won't approve, the relationship counselors will respond with advice you should buy, with all the ways to handle the inevitable resulting conflict.
If you share that you already have 37 basses, the rationalizers will show up to tell you it's unlucky to stop on an odd number and go for the purchase because you can't go back to 36.
If you say you can barely play bass at all, you are actually giving all the bass instructors that will respond plenty of advice to give you about how the new bass should advance you to Jaco level ability.
If you say your band mates won't approve of the new bass, well, you also need to warn your band mates of the coming attacks on their existence.
As far as the aforementioned BTB 845, I don't know much about that model, but that's certainly no reason not to buy the bass….
