Does anyone know of a manufacturer that makes Pressure Wound strings for the Medium Scale bass, like the Ibanez Mezzo?

Can you provide a couple of measurements?

Distance on your bass from where the E string ball end is seated to the tuner side of the nut.
And distance from where the E string ball end is seated to the E tuner post.

Most "medium scale" sets are 34"-35.5" in winding length, so that would be ideal. The thing, though, is I don't think anyone offers so-called "pressurewound" strings in "medium scale". As far as I know, both Rotosound Solo Bass 55 (SS) and SIT Silencers (NPS) only come in "long scale".

GHS Pressurewounds "long scale" are 37.25" from ball end to silk, so roughly 0.75" of the full winding on the E would wrap around the post. You just might be able to get away with that. I've used GHS Precision Flats on my P bass with some of the fully wound part of the E string wrapped around the post with no issues.

Cool, I really appreciate your words. So far, all I've been able to find for "Roller or Pressure Wound" have been long scale. I've had really good luck with GHS strings on my other basses, I'll give that a shot!

I would suggest contacting both companies to find out if they market a medium scale version. If they don’t, I believe GHS will do some custom orders without requiring a huge quantity. You might be able to order something special and only need to order a box of 10 sets. It can never hurt to ask!

Sadly incorrect, especially right now. We are not accepting any custom string requests.

Our custom string orders usually start with a minimum quantity of 144pc and $75 per string set up. So for a medium scale set of Pressurewounds, you’re looking at $300 in fees and 144 sets.

If you can't find pressure wounds that work, the next best thing might be DR Sunbeams in short scale. They're 33.75", will get longer when tuned to pitch, and are the smoothest roundwounds I've tried. Thomastik Jazz Rounds might be another good option. Their short scale set is actually medium scale.

Unfortunately, we're not a custom shop that can handle small quantities of items and can shift production on a dime.

Years ago (through Rudy’s Music on 48th St.) I used to get custom gauge sets of GHS strings and the minimum order was 10 sets but there’s a very big difference between mixing string gauges to make custom sets from stock that has already been manufactured and tooling up to make a string length that isn't part of your normal product line. I completely understand and respect that. In both cases it would be considered a custom order but one case is significantly more involved than the other.
