hmmm....currently on the first "basses" page of TALK BASS there are 5 polls out of 40 posted topics.

a mere 12%.

doesn't seem excessive to me...

also, polls are potential discussion starters.

BUT, doesn't take more than one slap to get me to stop.

Only because I "provoked" it!

It's also not just about numbers - polls stay around at the top for ages, because of the click and bump thing, while the real conversations get pushed back down and disappear off the bottom before you get a chance to join in. At one point in Technique though, there were more polls than anything else and quite often the only "new" threads are polls.

I would have to agree with you both about polls... Seriously, though I can see both drawbacks and benefits from the poll option. For instance, this poll. I have found this poll interesting, despite the fact that it is a little skewed by not being able to choose two basses. However, in the first post we are asked to only chose the make of our second bass, only after listing the first.

Hmm, I had to vote for my Spector NS-5CR, although my second bass would have to be my trusty 80's Fender Precision Special.

1. I could never give up my '67 Hofner so no choice there.
2. Fretless J-Bass.

If I had money to spend and they'd be willing to sell them:
Sir Paul's Hofner and Mr. Clarke's Alembic.
After that I'd never play bass again because I couldn't bring myself to pick them up. ;-)

Well this is my choice
1. Fender Jazz American series fiver (Already have)
2. Warwick Thumb Fretless (Really wished I had)

However I would use both of them together and they would work in harmony to creat massive amounts of creativity and good music, while at the same time entertaining me.

I could live with my Fender AmStd P-Bass and AmStd J-Bass and never look back. But, thank the Lord I don't have to.

I have my P, my J, my RB-5, and soon I'll have a brand spankin' new Urge II.

I have cut my collection down over the last six months. At one time I was up to nine basses. I started a log on each one. How often I practiced with it, gigged with it, took it out just to "fondle and admire", etc. After about a year of that, I started selling, or trading off, the ones that I just didn't use or seem to care about. There were some nice ones in there and I felt a little twinge when I dumped them. But, it made no sense to keep a lot of money tied up in something that I wasn't really using.

Right now I'm down to three that are keepers and will be back at four when the Urge II comes in. It will be a 3-color sunburst and is supposed to be built sometime in early September.

But if only two, the P and the J.
