Hey all,

I’m looking for some instrumental prog rock/metal recommendations. I’m not looking for something too aggressive, but I do want something with a bit of bite to it... Songs like Rush’s “La Villa Strangiato” or Metallica’s “The Call of Ktulu” are along the lines of what I’m looking for.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Plini is another cracking prog metal/djent artist with a unbelievable bass player called Simon Grove. Such ease and style. Also does double duty for intervals on bass aswell.

Simon Grove is my new favorite bassist - going to see Plini here in Chicago next month and I am STOKED!

JUst discovered this.. Presto Vivace. Bass solo introduction that will blow your mind.

At the moment I am really digging Night Verses. Their first two releases had vocals, but their latest is all instruments. Really well done for a three piece.
Scale the Summit was another good one. I lost interest when Mark Michell left.

How about some of the grandfathers of prog rock - Captain Beyond. Their debut album in 1972 had the original lineup, and was solid from start to finish (it's thematic). Lee Dorman's bass on this album was pure solid groove.

Not the best recording, but I found this:

Grandfathers of prog rock? That's a bit of a stretch. Prog was well underway by 1972. Keeping with the OP's request for instrumental only...
Soft Machine, on the other hand, could be contenders for that title if it really mattered, the anchors of the fabled Canterbury scene. The earliest material, dating from '67-'70, featured vocals. But aside from their first single, and after personnel changes and a slight readjustment in musical direction(which included going all instrumental), this was one of the only other times a guitarist was featured. But then again, not just any guitarist...

Holdsworth soon moved on to another band that had undergone some reorganization, Gong, which ironically was started in 1969 by the Soft's original short-term guitarist, Daevid Allen. After Allen bailed, the drummer, Pierre Moerlin took the group into an instrumental, somewhat fusion direction...

This German trio gets overlooked, but work a space in between older Genesis, ELP, and Crimson...

Steve Hillage was the lead guitarist in the original Gong line-up(which featured vocals), and went on to a vast array of solo albums. He did do a lot of singing, but this is one of the instrumental tracks from his first solo album...

And a live track from a few years later, actually a reworking of an older Gong theme...

Lastly, this band was headed up by Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera. The album was a sort of reunion, as it existed(but did not record)before PM went to Roxy....

There are other outfits I could mention, Caravan, Matching Mole, Hatfield and the North, but they featured vocals at some point, although the material was primarily instrumental. The original line-up of The Mahavishnu Orchestra, too fusion for you? It's a blurry line with some of these bands.
