iOS Bass Players Thread #6 - World Domination

Not open for further replies.
Haven't put that much thought into it yet. I'm currently finishing up a different build. I'd tend to lean towards wiring some sort of patch bay onto a control plate, and having different output options all in one place.

I dunno. I guess I've got some drawing to do.

I suggest you ask PG to send you the new Jamup HD plug. I've heard from Daniele that it sound way better then the Jam or the iRig HD. It is very small and will fit easily in a bass

We'll have to get one in and put it through our tests, then, and see how it compares.

Sorry to change the flow of the conversation here, but hoping you guys can help me out. A while back, I had my ipad 4 working fairly well with recording DM1 into Garageband. I didn't do anything for several months and then tried to take this back up last weekend. For some reason, the "system" doesn't seem to recognize DM1 using either audiocopy or Audiobus ( I successfully used both ways before). Note that I did not upgrade to ios7 when it came out - could that be a part of the problem. Any advice appreciated and go easy, I'm somewhat new to this. Thanks.

Start by making sure you have the apps updated, although incompatibility with 6.x might be the problem.

Why no iOS 7? I'm guessing that the apps were updated to work with 7 and it's not there...

Try cold-booting the iPad. Sometimes that breaks things loose.

I typically update apps frequently, but I suppose I succumbed to some of the early cautionary articles floating around on the internet about IOS 7 and didn't immediately bite. I'm guessing my fears were unfounded? Any glitches/drawbacks to updating to IOS 7? Thanks.

As do I, my friend. So any switches or buttons must be as easily reachable as my volume knob. Maybe I'll draw something up just to visualize it.

I figured that was the case, heh. So I have a suction cup iphone holder that's supposed to go on my dash - well, it sticks onto my crossbow just fine and I can hook everything to it and have a portable rig, but it's somewhat of a hassle to control while playing - at least it was until I got the blueboard.

Will for sure be great to hear the outcome of these statements after you guys place it under your microscope!!! :)

Do you have a good contact person at PG who might be able to get us a unit for review? If so, please send me a PM with this person's contact info.

Thanks, Tom.

I think at this point you are completely safe to upgrade.. I have both an iPhone 4s and iPad2 and both are running ios7 with no issues at all.. At this point, I imagine any app maker that intends on making their app available on ios7 has done so already.. unfounded - nope.. it always pays to let the adventurous deal with the problems that come with a major OS update like ios7 was but we're at the point now where as long as your hardware can run it there is no reason to not update and way more reasons to update.

Interesting how this thread has morphed over the last few months...

On the App related end of the discussions, what do you feel is the biggest hole in development on iOS in the Music Creation category? We seem to have enough amp sims to keep most people happy for years, enough synths to play with for the next several decades and even enough odd, never before seen instruments that couldn't exist without iOS devices.. To me, the biggest hole is a way to allow musicians to collaborate together, online using all these fantastic tools at our disposal. This has been the biggest reason I have gone back to my Mac and stopped using my iOS devices.

iOS desperately needs something like Riffworld, OHMSTUDIO or INDABA offer. A cloud based solution that connects musicians together to record within a common DAW and allows projects to be posted so others can contribute a part. The desktop solution that is getting the most buzz lately is OhmStudio. If you aren't familiar with it go check it out and tell me if you agree this is something that needs to come over to iOS..
With all the innovation that is happening in the world of iOS music there must be some reason this hasn't happened yet so if anyone knows that could be preventing this could you explain?

For me, the problem I have is using a sequencer or drum machine live. There is no iOS drum machine or sequencer that will receive MIDI program/patch change information. This means that you can't change patterns and songs from a MIDI controller.

Also, there is no simple play-list App. All I want is an app that will allow you to make a list, then choose the duration between songs or stop and wait for some kind of user input. I might be able to write one, but there no need to try due to the reason above.

I'm using OnSong to change patterns at the beginning of songs, then a foot controller to change from verse, chorus, ect. A DR-880 is used for drums because it's the best I could find to do the job. The iOS apps can't change from patch to patch fast enough, yet. They can't change instantly.

Those are pretty big deals for me, but other then that, I'm pleased with the direction things are going.

Tango remote, although mainly meant for remotely controlling ipad playlist from a iphone, has an option to make custom playlists and also the option to stop playback at the end of each song. So you'd have to manually start each track as needed.

This app worked wonders for me for a puppet show I ran audio for and performed in. I could control the tracks and volume all remotely from across the room.

It's not free but it's an option.

Anybody check out one of these yet with an iPad?

SPL Crimson

http://www.spl-usa.com/Crimson_p/1250.htm

I've got a few emails out checking compatibility with various instrument apps,
but I'm hoping it will work.

I'm hoping to be able to use it as a traditional recording interface with iOS and OS X
plus, if I RTFMd correctly I should be able to use it for playing out too.

I think I can

Plug a guitar/bass into it, run iOS apps like JamUp > Audiobus > Auria ( if I get a
gruntier iPad ), send instrument out to PA, get a full monitor feed, mix in "more-me"
if I want, mix in an ambient mic, and then send it all to IEMs, plus 5 pin DIN MIDI in/out

SPL has a great rep for quality gear and keeping things working, unlike some other high-end
manufacturers. I'm just waiting for answers to my compatibility Q's before I pull the trigger.

It's expensive, but not so much more so than the roughly equivalent Apogee, RME, etc...

If it works for me as imagined it'll save buying additional somethings like a headphone
mixer, MIDI interface and cabling as well as save some space.

Fingers crossed...
