Iron Ether Subterranea

i've been using mines again and i actually do stuff on purpose to freak it out and make it go audio wiggle butts. this is a song we're working on, all the bass parts (the two measure mini bridge at 1.02 and from 2.27 out.) are Organizer -> SubTah -> Manta.

lol. we're not setup to do recordings of my drummer's accoustic set, so excuse the meh tone of that. had to fake it with Battery.

Had mine for a week or two. I love it.

1) Do you notice that the Octave & Clean are very loud, and the Synth voices are quieter - I hadn't noticed, but I'm mixing the octave off or low most of the time.

2) The volume envelope is very dynamic - this is what I like about this pedal. It's more expressive, especially with an envelope filter after it. I've had other synth pedals, or combos with fuzz, that aren't dynamic, and they don't work for me.

3) tracking... the notes don't always sustain, and the octave voice jumps up to normal - typical for an octave pedal, and it seems the Subt is based on that type of design. The usual things help - use neck pickup, play higher up the neck, turn down the tone/treble, pluck over the end of the fingerboard, play cleanly etc.

I find the square waveforms to be a bit more splattery and noisy than the pulse and triangle waves, but they work well with an envelope. I tend to use the triangle wave for the octave down synth and the pulse wave for the normal octave synth, with a little bit of octaver mixed in.

Thanks for the responses.

To clarify, I'm just making sure the pedal is working similarly to what others experience. I'm cool with what it is, and can work with it with all my sleeve tricks - happy it's analog behavior is present because it will do so much more now!

I'm just considering the whole picture and how I plan to fit it into it - the videos and sound demos led me to believe it was something different than it is. Now that I have one I can go understand what it is!!

Right on, man! Some GREAT sounds, Sir Behndy. At 2:26, sounds like the invading bots have broken through the defenses and **** is about to get real...Love it!!!

This seems like it would only be useful for synthy electronic-ish stuff. So, maybe I should look for a different octave for my aggressive project. Unless someone has used it with some fuzz in a more aggressive fashion. Like some harsher synth noises.

Sounds great though, just not what I was imagining.

Ok, here goes. Warts and all.

Bridge pickup on full neck pickup off. NO loss of tracking quality. That is very impressive in my book. Especially considering my first thing in the morning/only halfway through my coffee/beat up from my gig last night chops.

sounds great!!!!!
i wish you had the video to go with sound :)

That is what I plan to do with it... I haven't yet, but will try. I may not post sounds, but I will report back at a minimum. Most of what has been demonstrated is synthy electronic-ish.

I now retract my previous statements. This pedal is truly phenominal. It's fat. It's raw. It's a synth in a box. It's tracking is maybe the best I've heard - including digital - I mean even the glitching is musical and even controllable. The volume envelope is great, dynamic & fun.

There is a knack to the thing. You have to learn it on your own.

The Moog low pass filter LOVES and wants to make babies with it. Wolly Mammoths & Brassmasters make it sound a little like a guitar or bass again, but oh so grinding and powerful. Dead Weather no prob. You can do some amazing things with a delay too.

EXACTLY what I wanted.

... Oh yeah. I found that a compressor before the pedal helps but isn't needed.

The pedal really does come alive when you follow it up with a good filter - even an EQ or compressor to help balance some of the frequencies.

You are not helping.

Okay y'all, another "which order" question - how would you set up a SubT, Xerograph Deluxe and a 3Leaf Proton?

I'd sell the 3Leaf, buy and Oxide and expression pedal, put the Oxide between the SubT and the Xerograph, plug the Expression Pedal into the Xerograph, then have a party.

Just got mine yesterday along with a Xerograph Deluxe. Wow! Took awhile to get used to th XD, but these pedals are just amazing. I can already see where I can use these pedals in my current band situation. I can't say that about some other pedals I've picked up along the way.

As far as the SubT, the tracking is great. No problem with the low E. The oscillators can be subtle or in your face. Same with the octave.

Gotta be careful with the low frequencies though. I think a compressor at the end of the signal chain is a good thing to have.
