Took me 4 tries because I got zero letters in the first two guesses. Total luck that I figured it out in 4.

I predict some win streaks get ruined today. This is the most obscure word yet, since the NYT took over.

I can't tell if I found a good set of words or if I just made the game more boring. I borrowed "bayou" as my starter from this thread, followed by "spend" and "right." Number four is flack/flick/flock/fleck, and from there it's two guesses. Really working thus far.

I stand by the strength of my opening word, and rarely need more than three unless there are a bunch of words off one letter that will fit. The right starting word has to provide more information than the vowels. Like, always have an "H" in your opener. No, it's not the highest usage, but even if you whiff on it, that means that all TH, SH, CH, WH, GH, and PH are also out. I will not reveal my starting word, but I beat all my friends using the more popular choices like ADIEU and BAYOU. Knowing the vowels does not reveal as much useful info as they think.

It's funny. I don't have an opening word. I also don't compete with my friends each day. That takes the joy out of it for me, even though I typically get it in 3 or 4.

I have favorite first words… things like STARE & CHEAT for obvious reasons. But most days I just go with the flow. It's more fun that way. I started with PLAIN today. Never used it before & likely won't use it again in the near future, for obvious reasons :thumbsup:.

Still, I feel like my stats are decent and I enjoy those couple of minutes each morning. My daily moment of linguistic zen.

A little meaningless sparring between friends is good for the soul sometimes. I have one friend who it is head to head with daily, but I don't generally post a daily result. I am a musician, and he is a doctor of clinical drug research and published writer, and we've been best friends since 7th grade. If I can best him, even occasionally, in something that involves brain power, it is a reason for trash talking. He is totally empirical about it, using the hierarchy of letter usage and such nonsense. I do like the consistency of using the same word to open, especially when it's a full whiff. As I said, a good opener should give you just as much deductive data from a strike out as getting letters correct.

I use a different starting word each day. Keeps me on my toes. Most are solved by lines 3 and 4. For one puzzle a month ago I couldn't guess the correct word in 12 tries! I can get a new blank puzzle on a different device.

I knew today's artist but couldn't remember the song. Most of the time I don't know them at all because it's too contemporary for my feeble old brain.
