Is In-n-Out Burger THIS good?

When an In-n-Out opened in Sacramento years ago, I decided to check it out after the hype died down (I was NOT going to stand in a long line). I thought the food was just pretty good, even by fast-food standards. It kind of reminded me of the hype surrounding Krispy Kreme doughnuts. When I finally tried them, they were just okay. They were too airy for me; I like a doughnut with more substance. Yes, they were hot and fresh, but not especially tasty. I've heard people say that it depends on which In-n-Out you go to, but who wants to search for the best ones? Shouldn't the quality be consistent?

compared to the lot of other fast food joints, the burgers win hands down. the fries are pretty bland though.

anyone tried the fries animal style? that's some artery clogging goodness there.. i thought they were a joke until a friend of mine ordered them. just... gnarly

Ideally, yes. However, youve got to keep in mind that each location has drawn workers from its local pool, so geography plays a part. They also tend to hire a lot of younger workers, and we all know that the kids dont all take their jobs seriously. Ive had some really bad In-N-Out before, and then Ive had the best In-N-Out from the same location at a different time. Consistency in quality of a fast food restaurant has a lot of variables, like time of day, how busy they are at that moment, the particular employees working at the time, etc.

Also, I see a lot of dislike for In-N-Outs fries. Personally, they are my favorite fries from any fast food location. Diced in store, fried fresh, taste great hot or cold. The only time I dont like them is when theyre overcooked. Some people prefer themt hat way though, and InO will honor thy request.

It's good but not as good as getting a pound of good beef, garlic salt, chopped onions & fried eggs, & making that at home for you & 3 friends. Whenever I eat there & my stomach is losing it's stitching I ask myself if I can eat another. I'd like to but I don't.

If you go, order the double-double, animal style--with grilled onions, mustard, & pickles. Adding salt & pepper makes them better. Hold the tomatoes or get them on the side because they're fresh. Fresh tomatoes = a lot of liquid = wet burger. Not so good.

Better/best burgers in Los Angeles:

This is all totally true. However, I would consider these other places a step above the category of In-N-Out, and therefore not a fair comparison.

As someone who hasn't been within spitting distance of an In-n-Out yet, it seems like the hype around this place has reached nutty levels.

I haven't been to Five Guys yet, although one did open up a couple blocks from me last week. My expectations for it are realistic, though--it doesn't seem to get nearly as much hype. Maybe it's because I know people who have been there and they've told me the scoop--good (not great), but greasy. I'll give it a shot, but I'm not expecting God's gift to hamburgers.

It certainly is overhyped, which results in these out of staters low opinion of it. If you had it available to you evryday, you would know the wonders of In n Out. Im going there right now.

I learned about the not-so-secret menu probably the same way you did - by word-of-mouth in California. I was introduced to In-n-Out when I spent the summer of '98 there. Although no one told me that you coukd get the fries animal style until significantly later than that.

Most Texans probably don't know about the off-menu stuff since thy just opened their first location in Texas this week.

Yeah, though these days 'word of mouth' has evolved into 'on the net' so I'd bet a lot of people who know of In-N-Out these days have heard of the secret stuff.
